Buzzfeed adds that Neil Diamond flew himself to Boston this morning and phoned the stadium to see if he could perform the Fenway Park standard Sweet Caroline in person.

FRANCE: Anti-Gay Marriage Activists Plan Another Big Rally For Tomorrow

Organizers of France's increasingly violent anti-gay marriage movement are urging supporters to take to the streets tomorrow in advance of what may be the bill's finalization on Tuesday.
"There are only a few days left and we are not going to abandon the streets now," one of the organisers of Sunday's demonstration, Alberic Dumont, told AFP. Tens of thousands are expected to turn out, although organisers admit they are unlikely to see a repeat of a huge demonstration in March that was attended by more than 300,000 people. Meanwhile, opponents continued to protest in Paris and other cities in France, with 75 people detained Thursday -- three of whom have been accused of violence against police and theft.

On Wednesday, demonstrations also turned violent, with two journalists attacked, their equipment destroyed, and cars vandalised. News of a fresh attack on a gay bar also emerged, with the manager and client of an establishment in the southwestern city of Bordeaux assaulted overnight on Wednesday by two people who also smashed bottles and glasses. The attack happened on the same night as a similar incident in the northern city of Lille, where three employees of a gay bar were injured in an attack by four men who smashed the building's windows.
Gay Star News reports that a new group joining the protests is calling themselves The Hommen in an apparent take on the famous FEMEN activists from Ukraine.  And like FEMEN, the all-male Hommen also protests topless.
Men are stripping to the waist, scribbling slogans on their body, holding hands and demonstrating across France against gay marriage. The slogans on their bodies, written in French and English, declare ‘No gay marriage’ ‘Save kids’ and ‘Demo [democracy] dead’. Their page on Facebook declares they stand for ‘women and children first’.

And they accuse French President François Hollande of ‘gassing’ children. French riot police have used tear gas to stem the violence at some anti-gay marriage protests and the demonstrators have been accused of using their children as a ‘human shield’ against the authorities.

They declare (translated from French): ‘François Hollande must leave his deafening silence. His contempt for the people screaming is a denial of democracy. Gassing children on 24 March is a fault that should never happen again. We will not yield.’
VIDEO: Here's a press conference and demonstration held by the Hommen on Thursday in which they burn the words "democracy" and "dictatorship" while a lone female counter-protester shouts at them. Gay Star News calls it "the most homoerotic anti-gay protest ever." One gay activist snipes: "For some people the best way to protest is to show their own bodies because they aren’t very good looking. But that’s just being bitchy and we should be better than that."

HomoQuotable - Doug Mainwaring

"[Gay] proponents are well aware of just how weak and vulnerable their grandiose narrative is, so they desperately need the Supreme Court to rule in their favor. June, when their ruling will be announced, can’t come fast enough as far as they’re concerned; otherwise the push for sweeping transformational change is lost. Just as the Prohibition movement advanced too far, leading to repeal, so too will the same-sex marriage cabal’s efforts be recognized as a tyrannical assault on freedom and a rejection of natural law and reason.

"Our recent juridical and legislative history is rife with assaults on the rights and needs of children, always trumped in favor of selfish adults. No more. I am confident that the naked overreach of the media and progressive activists on this issue will invite a voter backlash that will either meet or exceed the same-sex marriage movement’s achievements, leading to a thorough rethinking of Roe v. Wade, no-fault divorce, and our debilitating, anti-family, anti-father welfare state." - Self-hating homosexual, Tea Party activist, and NOM ally Doug Mainwaring, writing for the anti-gay Witherspoon Institute.

FRC Busted In Silly Silly Lie

I don't know how he figures these things out, but internet sleuthing kingpin Jeremy Hooper has busted yet another hate group in a silly, silly lie. This time it's the Family Research Council, who used the above image in their anti-gay Boy Scouts clip that I posted earlier this week.  Note the BSA logo and the "2013 policy meeting" sign.  Hooper writes:
It's a complete fabrication. FRC simply Photoshopped a Boy Scout logo and a "2013 Policy Meeting" placard onto an existing picture that they lifted from another site. The picture in question is actually from the website LegalGeekery.com and is described as being from the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
And here's the original photo.  Did the FRC hire the person who's been faking all those photos at NOM?

Second Suspect Captured

Some early details:
Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge was apprehended shortly before 8:45 p.m. “They got him. He’s in custody,” a state trooper told the media gathered in the neighborhood. A crowd of onlookers broke into applause. Tsarnaev had been hiding in a boat in the backyard of a home in Watertown, just outside the city. He was rushed to a local hospital. Police had approached him cautiously, worried that he might be wearing a suicide bomb vest. “We got him,” Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino tweeted immediately aftewards. He took to the police radio to thank officers personally, telling them, “Good job, guys!”
UPDATE: The Boston Police and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick have held a press conference.

Bucks For Bauman

A crowdfunding website to pay the medical expenses of bombing victim Jeff Bauman has already raised almost $200,000. Bauman lost both of his legs in the attack and a gruesome photo of his injuries instantly became one of the tragedy's most haunting images. He is also the only person to provide the FBI with an eyewitness description of one of the bombers, scrawling an initial note from hospital bed that read, "Bag. Saw the guy. Looked right at me."

Think Progress reports on the Bauman fundraising campaign and laments the state of health insurance.
The 27-year-old’s story is particularly tragic considering that he lives in Massachusetts, the state that gave birth to Obamacare and has the lowest uninsurance rate in the country. Unfortunately, Bauman — who worked part-time at Costco and was planning on going back to school — is one of the mere 1.9 percent of Massachusetts residents without health coverage. He likely would have gained insurance under his school’s health plan had he made it there before the bombings.

Bauman has been fortunate enough to receive an impressive number of donations to help him pay his bills, and his uncle plans to buy him his first pair of prosthetic legs. But many other victims in the Boston bombings may not be as fortunate. The cost of treating the bombing survivors’ injuries is expected to exceed $9 million. The out-of-pocket costs associated with that treatment could bury many of the victims financially, even if they do have insurance — unless hospitals, insurers, and charitable foundations swoop in to help, as they did after the mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

Chechen President Issues Statement

"The events that took place in Boston are tragic. People have been killed as a result of a terrorist act. Earlier we expressed our condolences to the residents of the city and to the American people. Today, according to media reports, during an arrest attempt a certain Tsarnaev was killed. It would have made sense to arrest him and carry out an investigation, clarify all the circumstances and his degree of guilt. Evidently, the security services needed a result at any price in order to calm the populace.

"Any attempts to link Chechnya and the Tsarnaevs, if indeed they are guilty, are futile. They grew up in the USA, their viewpoints and beliefs were formed there. You must look for the roots of [their] evil in America. Terrorism must be fought everywhere. We know this better than anyone. We wish all the victims a [speedy] recovery and share in Americans’ grief." - Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, who issued his statement via Instragram and included three hashtags. Seriously.

Perkins: Sexual Liberalism Caused Boston

"If Congress wants to stop these tragedies, then it has to address the government's own hostility to the institution of the family and organizations that can address the real problem: the human heart. As I've said before, America doesn't need gun control, it needs self-control. And a Congress that actively discourages it through abortion, family breakdown, sexual liberalism, or religious hostility is only compounding the problem." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, coming thisclose to blaming the Boston bombings on gay marriage.

Boy Scouts Ban On Openly Gay Members Might Be Ending, Vote Is Due In May

Openly gay leaders, it appears, will remain banned. Reuters has the news:
The Boy Scouts of America called to end a long-standing ban on openly gay members, a spokesman said on Friday, but the organization's board must still vote in May on whether to ratify the resolution. If the vote is approved, "no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone," Deron Smith, the organization's spokesman, told Reuters.
The spokesman says the resolution draws on three months of discussions, surveys, and research.
UPDATE: The Courage Campaign reacts.
"Despite the efforts of a vocal minority, from politics to business to culture, we are seeing a rapid and historic shift towards equality for all. The Boy Scouts are now beginning to catching up with this reality. This is yet another step in the right direction towards ending discrimination against LGBT youth across this country. Yet, the Boy Scouts need to go further and end all discrimination within their organization. Discrimination and hatred have no place in a country founded on the principles of liberty, justice and equality."

French MPs Fistfight Over Gay Marriage

Members of France's National Assembly came to blows yesterday as the finalization of  same-sex marriage was debated. Via Pink News:
On Friday, the lower house of French National Assembly almost mirrored violent protests outside, around the issue of equal marriage, as MPs came to the end of the capped 25-hour debate around the bill which would allow equal marriage, and same sex couples the right to adopt.

Punches were reportedly thrown in the scuffle, which lasted several minutes, whilst ministers shouted “out”, “out”. One minister said he had never experienced such an incident in his 30 years in the lower house. The incident, which was attributed to fatigue and the high emotions brought on by the controversial nature of the issue, was condemned by the ruling Socialist party.
Aside from the fisticuffs, things went well for our side and the very last vote is expected to take place on Tuesday. In this clip the video stream is paused just as the fight begins.

As violent anti-gay French protesters commit brutal bashings, battle riot police using toddlers as human shields,  and smash the windows of gay bars, Brian Brown writes on NOM's blog:
In France spontaneous peaceful demonstrations by young people protesting their government's determination to ignore the voice of the people is causing headaches across the country. For the government, this is becoming a major headache. These young people are making sure government officials' support for gay marriage is not forgotten. Violence did break out but not from the pro-marriage protestors. Change is coming, something new is stirring. The truth will win out.

REPORT: Bombers From Russia

CNN reports:
The suspects involved in the Boston Marathon bombing were brothers from the Russian Caucasus who moved to Kazakhstan before coming to the United States several years ago, a source briefed on the investigation told CNN. One of the brothers, identified by several sources as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, studied engineering at Bunker Hill Community College but had taken off a year to train as a boxer, the source said.

The source said that a posting on a social media site under his name included the comment: "I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them." He was wounded overnight and taken to a hospital, where he died. Police: 1 suspect dead, 1 on the run Several sources identified his brother, who remains on the lam, as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19.
Here's an interview with the brothers' uncle, who apparently gets the news that one of his nephews is dead from the reporter. "I'm shocked. Wordless. They do not deserve to exist on this earth. I have no idea."

MONTANA: Sodomy No Longer Illegal

Montana's governor has signed the bill repealing the state's ban on sodomy.
When Montana Gov. Steve Bullock signed Senate Bill 107 decriminalizing gay sex, cheers erupted in the Capitol's Rotunda. It had been 16 years after the state Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional and 24 years after gay rights activists began their fight to take government out of the bedroom. "I am not going to speak too long because, frankly, the longer I talk, the longer this embarrassing and unconstitutional law stays on the books," Bullock said.

The victory, though a powerful one for the gay community in Montana, is highly symbolic with no tangible benefits aside from striking the obsolete law condemning gay sex from Montana code. The outdated code has not been used to prosecute individuals for years. And previous efforts to offer gays and lesbians protection under the law, including a push to prohibit civil discrimination, have been thwarted by a GOP-controlled Legislature.

Flamenco flash mobs - seemingly spontaneous dance and song performances - have been taking place in banks not just in Seville, but all over Andalusia, causing short, if amusing disruptions to the working day. Some involve just one or two dancers, performing silently in front of bemused customers and clerks. Others can be made up of several dozen bailaores clicking their fingers and stomping their feet to recorded music. The flash mobs are staged by an anti-capitalist group known as Flo6x8 to express anger and frustration at the economic crisis.

Idaho Town Rejects LGBT Rights

Last night the Idaho town of Pocatello (population 54,000) rejected a proposed ordinance that would have banned anti-LGBT discrimination in housing, accommodations, and employment.
An evenly divided Pocatello City Council voted 3-3 on a motion to approve the ordinance following another short public hearing on changes made since the ordinance was first proposed April 4. Voting for the ordinance were Eva Nye, Gary Moore and Roger Bray. Those opposed were Steve Brown, Craig Cooper and Jim Johnston. “Either way I'm going to be loved or hated by half this crowd,” Blad said before casting his vote against the ordinance. The April 4 meeting on the ordinance featured a lengthy hearing that drew 50 people who testified in support and 15 opposed. Before he announced his “no” vote, Mayor Blad explained to the crowd in City Hall that it was a difficult decision on his part. “I believe this has divided the community in half,” Blad said about the proposed ordinance. “I believe we can draft an ordinance that most people can accept.”
Similar legislation already exists in the Idaho towns of Boise, Sandpoint, and Moscow. Idaho Agenda reports an unsurprising angle to the Pocatello vote: "Reports suggest Heritage Foundation may have played a major role in tonight's Pocatello anti-discrimination vote. This marks the first major national conservative influence on a local LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance in Idaho." (Tipped by JMG reader Rick)

GEORGIA: Anti-Gay Hate Crime Guilty Plea Is First In State History

Two Georgia men have pleaded guilty to hate crime charges in the beating of a gay man. The case is the first anti-gay federal hate crime conviction in state history. Under a plea arrangement, the hate crime charges will not result in added prison time. Via Project Q Atlanta:
Christopher Cain and Dorian Moragne—two of the four men who beat Brandon White during an attack in southwest Atlanta on Feb. 4, 2012—were sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five years to serve, during a trial in Fulton County Superior Court last July. Under a plea agreement announced Thursday, the men will also serve a concurrent sentence on the federal hate crime charge.

Cain and Moragne admitted to violating the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which was expanded in 2009 to include crimes motivated by sexual orientation and gender identity. Yates said the hate crimes convictions based on sexual orientation are a first in Georgia. The state’s hate crimes law was scrapped by the Georgia Supreme Court in 2004.

TODAY: Day Of Silence

Today is GLSEN's annual Day Of Silence and dozens of anti-gay groups have demanded that Christian parents keep their kids out of school rather than learn that it's wrong to beat up gay kids.  From the SPLC-certified hate group, the Illinois Family Institute:
Parents and Guardians: Call your children’s middle and high schools and ask if students and/or teachers will be permitted to refuse to speak during class on Friday, April 19, 2013. If your administration allows students and/or teachers to refuse to speak during class, call your child out of school. Every student absence costs school districts money. When administrators refuse to listen to reason and when they allow the classroom to be exploited for political purposes, parents must take action.
Yup. They literally want to deprive schools of money over this.

Reuters Kills George Soros

News agencies routinely write advance obituaries for famous people, particularly if they are elderly or in poor health. Yesterday Reuters accidentally published an rather nasty obit for George Soros, who is 82. An excerpt from the now-deleted story
George Soros, who died XXX at age XXX, was a predatory and hugely successful financier and investor, who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions". It goes on to describe Mr Soros, 82, as “an enigma, wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money". The obituary also focuses on his role as a philanthropist , pointing to the "roughly $8bn he has given away through various charitable entities he controls".
The mistake was widely mocked on right wing sites where commenters lamented that Soros still lives.

REPORT: Crazy Eyes' Former Chief Of Staff To Snitch On Her Presidental Campaign

Michele Bachmann's former chief of staff is reportedly about corroborate claims that her presidential campaign made illegal payments to its Minnesota chairman.
Having maintained a public silence so far, Andy Parrish referred questions Wednesday to his attorney, John Gilmore, who said his client will corroborate allegations from another former Bachmann aide, Peter Waldron. Waldron, a Florida pastor, claims that the campaign hid payments to Iowa Sen. Kent Sorenson, in violation of Iowa Senate ethics rules that bar members from receiving pay from presidential campaigns.

Until now, Parrish has been identified by the committee only as “Witness A,” Gilmore said. “The time has come to confirm that ‘Witness A’ is Andy Parrish, and he’ll be providing an affidavit with supporting material that completely supports the representations previously made by Peter Waldron,” Gilmore said. Sorenson has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, calling the ethics charges “totally baseless, without evidence, and a waste of Iowans’ time and money.” Lawyers for the Bachmann campaign also have denied the allegations.
If the name Andy Parrish seems familiar to you, it's because he was also the campaign manager for the NOM-affiliated Minnesota For Marriage. You may recall that last summer Parrish published Levitical calls to murder homosexuals on his Facebook page only to late claim that he'd been hacked.

Latest Conspiracy Lie From Teabagistan

For the last 36 hours or so, wingnut sites such as World Net Daily, Fox News, Breitbart, Glenn Beck's The Blaze, and Pam Geller's Atlas Shrugs have claimed that President Obama has struck a super secret deal with Saudi Arabia to spirit that 20 year-old Saudi kid out of the nation under the guise of deportation in order not to embarrass "Obama's Arab buddies" when the kid's membership in Al Qaeda is revealed. REPORT: One Bombing Suspect Caught
UPDATE: Suspect Died After Gun Battle

The Boston Globe is reporting:
One suspect in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings has been captured, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation. Another remains on the loose in Watertown after a firefight with police. Authorities have established a 20-block perimeter as they search for him.

A scene of chaos descended on Cambridge and Watertown late Thursday night and early Friday morning, as police confirmed an MIT police officer was shot and killed, and an apparent carjacking led police on a wild chase into Watertown. Witnesses in Watertown said they heard explosions. Police officers were screaming about improvised explosive devices.

Authorities would not comment on whether the events were connected to Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings. At least one of the suspects in Watertown appeared to be a man in his 20s. FBI agents were on the scene in Watertown. The FBI source said early Friday it is “too early to speculate” on a relation to the Marathon bombing.
Please keep in mind how many times the media has been wrong this week.

UPDATE: Separately from tonight's action, the FBI has released new photos of the suspects.
UPDATE II: Apparently the man cited above is dead.
UPDATE III: Here's video taken of the apparent shootout.

UPDATE IV: Via NBC News.
Law enforcement sources said the suspects have international links and have been in the country legally for about a year. The suspects approached the MIT officer and shot him in head, the sources said. The two then stole the MIT officer's cruiser, robbed a nearby 7-11 and carjacked a Mercedes SUV, briefly kidnapping the driver, the sources said. At various points, the suspects threw explosives out the window of the moving car. The dead suspect had an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest and the law enforcement sources warned that the suspect on the run may as well.

Nathan Lane Opens In The Nance

Last night I attended a press event for The Nance, the Broadway show starring Tony-winner Nathan Lane that opened this week.  From the four-star review in the New York Daily News:
Set in 1937 New York, the action follows Chauncey Miles (Lane), a performer with a niche role in a ragtag theater company. Chauncy plays the nance — a stock character who was a flamingly effeminate homosexual. “I like to play with the organ,” quips Chauncey. “I love, love, love when the organ swells? Oh, you brutes.” It was fine to swish and dish on stage, but it wasn’t okay to be gay offstage. A kiss between two men could get them pummeled by police and tossed in the clink. All the more so, thanks to Mayor LaGuardia’s morals crackdown in advance of the World’s Fair.   The action moves from burlesque theater where bawdy acts play out, complete with a tatty orchestra, to Chauncey’s Village apartment to a downtown automat where Chauncey trolls for assignations. John Lee Beatty’s evocative set spins its way to each location. Lane has won Tonys for musical star turns in “The Producers” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Under Jack O’Brien’s assured direction, he’s funny, sad and touching as the conflicted Chauncey.
Speaking to The Slant, playwright Douglas Carter Beane cited the "holy trinity" of television's nance performers: Charles Nelson Reilly, Paul Lynde, and Alan Sues. Beane then provided some Depression-era theater history on nance characters.
In the early part of the 1930s there was something called the "Pansy Craze," and every nightclub, burlesque, vaudeville, and Broadway house had these gay characters. There was an explosion of this particular type of comedy and it was hugely popular. And then by the late 1930s there was a backlash. There was a new mayor of New York and a new administration: Fiorello LaGuardia was probably the best mayor the city ever had, but he was very Catholic and very uptight. He couldn't stand burlesque. He thought it was cheap and vulgar and so he hired a man named Paul Moss as the commissioner of licenses. You couldn't perform in New York without having a license first, and Moss basically took it upon himself to shut down burlesque, not only for women stripping, but also for "deviance on stage." That meant any portrayal of a gay person in a play. You couldn't make a reference to a gay character even in a Broadway show.
You'll find quite a few references to modern day politics in The Nance, particularly in Lane's gay Republican title character and in the closeted Ken Mehlman-like license commissioner determined to keep gays off the stage. And if you like the rimshot groaners that were the stock of burlesque - those are nonstop. I'll give you just one. Dressed in a drag as an aging hooker, Lane says, "He said to me, 'Hortense, you are nothing but a two-bit hooker.' So I hit him with my bag of quarters." Bah-dum-dum.  Highly recommended.
