NOM's Hate March: A Cavalcade Of Crackpottery And One Catholic Drunk

NOM today published the above list of speakers scheduled for their hate march on the Supreme Court.  Hopefully there'll be an open bar for busted drunk driver Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and an emergency Botox station for Concernstipated Women head Penny Nance.  And we can only presume that New York state Sen. Ruben Diaz will bring along the same speaker who told attendees at the last NOM hate march that homosexuals are "worthy of death."  As for "Bishop" Harry Jackson, let's just hope he doesn't curse the Washington Blade into bankruptcy, as he claims to have done with other "Satanic gay publications."  DC police should also keep an eye on Jim Garlow, who has called on pastors to emulate to the Founding Fathers and "pick up a musket" against evil homosexuals.

VIRGINIA: Tracy Thorne-Begland Sworn In As State's First Openly Gay Judge

After a lengthy battle against local and national hate groups, yesterday former prosecutor and Navy jet pilot Tracy Thorne-Begland (above right) kissed his husband after being sworn in as Virginia's first openly gay judge.
That process took its toll on Thorne-Begland. In fact, he said the long nomination process left him physically and mentally exhausted. Thorne-Begland said the history-making moment would not be possible without the help of his sponsor in the House of Delegates, Manoli Loupassi R-Richmond. “So the fact that his sexual orientation has nothing to do with it,” Loupassi said. “If you’re black or Latino or whatever. It doesn’t matter. Can you do the job? Are you qualified for the job? If you’re qualified and you can do the job then you’ll you should be able to get the job, too.” Richmond’s newest judge thanked his partner of 20 years and two children for their support amid applause.
There's a great video clip at the link. (Tipped by JMG reader Roland)

RELATED: In 1992 Thorne-Begland came out on national television in support of Bill Clinton's campaign pledge to end the military's exclusion of openly gay service members. He was then honorably discharged. DADT went into effect the following year.

Hate Groups Scream After Top Romney Advisors Sign Marriage Equality Brief

Far-right and anti-gay groups are screaming varying versions of "We KNEW it!" today after a raft of top Romney campaign advisors signed the GOP brief in support of same-sex marriage.

Bob Vander Plaats, head of Iowa's Family Leader:
"The only surprise here is that Romney himself didn’t join them. As you know, many conservatives did not trust Romney on marriage, life, and other social issues…Now, true colors are exposed by these leaders of his campaign…You can tell a lot about a person by who he chooses to surround himself with.”
Iowa Republican Committee member Jamie Johnson:
"I am not surprised. In the last election cycle, those of us who truly cared about preserving traditional marriage and protecting the right to life of the unborn ran from Mitt Romney as we would from a rattlesnake.”
Santorum backer Chuck Laudner:
"Certainly not surprised. They never wanted social issues in the campaign. Romney kept the moral compass spinning on social issues, and it’s no surprise his followers have to blame the issue rather than the candidate for the loss.”
The Washington Examiner ticks off the Romney campaign names on the brief:
Beth Myers, perhaps Romney’s closest aide in the campaign; Ben Ginsberg, the campaign’s influential lawyer; David Kochel, the campaign’s main strategist in Iowa (where Romney worked hard to win the support of Republicans for whom traditional marriage is a key issue); Katie Biber, the campaign’s general counsel; Lee Rudofsky, the deputy general counsel; and Alex Lundry, a top tech official in the campaign.
The GOP brief, which is headlined by homocon former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, has swelled (at this writing) to 131 names since it first was made public with 75 signees.  Of particular note to us here is the presence of sitting New York state Sen. Mark Grisanti, who famously reversed on marriage in 2011 and helped provide our slim margin of victory, turning him into NOM's arch enemy.  Despite NOM's $2M pledge to unseat Grisanti, he easily won his GOP primary against the NOM-backed opponent.

Tony Perkins: Obama's Brief Is Tyranny

"To the 7,001,084 Californians who exercised their constitutional right to protect marriage, the President's decision is a deep betrayal of the democratic process and America's identity of political diversity. Making matters worse, the President's plan for disenfranchising these millions of voters is bringing the full weight of the government to bear against its own people! By enlisting the Justice Department, the White House is using Americans' own resources against them to take away their ability to participate in the democratic process. That's not equality--it's tyranny. In the hands of this administration, the Justice Department is no longer the gatekeeper of U.S. law but a weapon to bludgeon the American people and change laws. And until the administration puts constitutional principle ahead of its extreme liberal political agenda, marriage will be the first of its many casualties." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, via press release.

Quote Of The Day: Ellen DeGeneres

"I’ve never filed a brief to the Supreme Court, so I thought I would post mine here. I’m sure someone will tweet it to them. Portia and I have been married for 4 years and they have been the happiest of my life. And in those 4 years, I don’t think we hurt anyone else’s marriage. I asked all of my neighbors and they say they’re fine.   But even though Portia and I got married in the short period of time when it was legal in California, there are 1,138 federal rights for married couples that we don’t have, including some that protect married people from losing their homes, or their savings or custody of their children.

"The truth is, Portia and I aren’t as different from you as you might think. We’re just trying to find happiness in the bodies and minds we were given, like everyone else. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, 'We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.'  And there’s another famous quote that says 'A society is judged by how it treats its weakest members.' I couldn’t agree with that more. No one’s really sure who said it first, so if anyone asks, tell them I said it." - Ellen DeGeneres, writing on her website.

Finnish Parliament Rejects Marriage

A marriage equality bill failed to get out of its committee in Finland's Parliament today. Pink News reports:
The bill, proposed by the National Coalition Party (NCP) minister Alexander Stubb proposed the bill, which would have made marriage gender-neutral, therefore allowing same-sex couples to marry. It was rejected 9 votes to 8, and so it will not go before the full legislature for consideration. The bill would have made regulations relating to marriage equal for all, irrespective of the gender of the partners. In Finland, gay and lesbian couples can currently register their partnerships, but do not automatically take each others’ surnames, or adopt children, reports YLE.
Next month LGBT rights groups will launch a petition campaign to force another vote. Fifty thousand signatures are required. Finland is the sole Scandinavian Nordic nation without marriage equality.

Billboard Magazine Rejiggers Pop Charts

Last week Billboard Magazine altered the methodology of tabulating its pop charts, making a radical change not seen since they began including digital downloads as a ranking criteria.
YouTube streaming data is now factored into the Hot 100 (and other genre charts), enhancing a mix of data that includes digital download track sales (and physical singles sales), as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, as well as terrestrial radio airplay, on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming, as tracked by Nielsen BDS.
And that, at least in part, is why Harlem Shake is #1 this week.  The change also possibly knocked gay-friendly Macklemore's Thrift Shop from the top spot after a four-week run.

More horse meat has been found for sale in Britain.
Four beef products sold by Bird's Eye, Taco Bell and catering supplier Brakes have been found to contain horse DNA, the Food Standards Agency says. This is the third wave of test results received by the FSA, which has now received a total of 5,430 test results. Meanwhile, new tests conducted on beef retail products revealed no new cases of horsemeat adulteration, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said. This latest round of tests saw 1,797 products being examined. The affected products are Birds Eye's Traditional Spaghetti Bolognese and Beef Lasagne - which the company took of shelves last week as a precaution; Brakes' Spicy Beef Skewer; Taco Bell's Ground Beef.

TEXAS: Lesbian Suffers Broken Jaw In Playground Attack By Anti-Gay Parent

A Texas lesbian has had her jaws wired shut after a brutal attack that came when she attempted to stop older children from bullying her girlfriend's four year-old son at a local playground.  The victim says the assault began when the parent of another child realized that she is a lesbian. Thus far police are refusing to consider the attack to have been a hate crime.
“When he walked up thinking it was father and mom with the kid, he wasn’t as angry,” said [girlfriend Hillary] Causey, 26, “but then when he figured out it was a female, he got like super pissed, and I don’t know why.” She said the man punched and kicked Scarber repeatedly, hurling homophobic slurs at her while she lay on the ground, unconscious. “He was like, ‘well if you think you’re a man… I’m going to treat you like a man,’” Causey said. “All she kept saying was, ‘I’m a female. I’m a female…' She never even had time to take her hands out of pockets to try and block herself.” Mesquite police haven’t caught the suspect. Officers aren’t convinced the attack meets the true qualifications of a hate crime, since the scuffle among children was the initial trigger. “At this point, we have no indication the assault occurred because of her sexual orientation,” said Lt. Bill Hedgpeth with the Mesquite police. “Regardless of motive, we want to catch them.”

Half Of Congress Files DOMA Brief

Almost half of the sitting members of Congress today filed a joint Supreme Court brief in the support of the overturn of DOMA. Via press release:
Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Ranking Constitution Subcommittee Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) in the House, and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in the Senate, along with House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Ranking House Judiciary Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL), are filing an amicus brief in the United States Supreme Court in U.S. v. Edith Schlain Windsor, a landmark challenge to Section 3 of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  Section 3 defines marriage for purposes of federal law as “only a legal union between one man and one woman,” excluding same-sex couples from all marriage-based federal responsibilities and rights.  A total of 172 Members of the House and 40 Members of the Senate – including LGBT Equality Caucus Co-Chairs Jared Polis (D-CO), David Cicilline (D-RI), Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and Mark Takano (D-CA), as well as Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) – signed onto the brief.

These 212 Members decided to participate as amici in this case because they want the Supreme Court to hear the full story from Congress, and to explain why they believe that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional.  They disagree with the arguments being made by lawyers hired to defend DOMA in court by the House Majority following the divided 3-2 vote of the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG).  The amicus brief filed today makes clear that BLAG does not speak for Congress, and that many members believe that Section 3 should be struck down because there simply is no legitimate federal interest in denying married same-sex couples the legal security, rights and responsibilities that federal law provides to all other married couples.  As the brief explains: “DOMA imposes a sweeping and unjustifiable federal disability on married same-sex couples.”

CLAIM: Vatican Knew Five Months Ago About Cardinal O'Brien's Gayness

The Scotsman reports an interesting claim today.
The Vatican knew of allegations against Cardinal Keith O’Brien five months ago, it was claimed today. Reports said a priest lodged a complaint in October about “inappropriate behaviour” by the former Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 2001. The priest is said to have written directly to Rome because he did not think he could trust the church hierarchy in Scotland to handle the matter.

His claim is said to have been taken seriously and led to the Vatican contacting Cardinal O’Brien and a “deal” being brokered by Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Montreal for the departure of the leader of Scotland’s Catholics. Cardinal O’Brien quit as archbishop on Monday following revelations at the weekend about allegations from three other priests and one former priest of inappropriate behaviour dating back to the 1980s. The cardinal contests the allegations.
This is the fifth priest claiming to have had sex or "inappropriate contact" with the Cardinal.

NOM Slams Times On Musgrave

"Congresswoman Musgrave is a hero for marriage and was the lead sponsor of the original Federal Marriage Amendment in 2003. The fact that the New York Times would falsely claim above-the-fold that she now supports repealing a law to protect marriage without even checking with her shows the desperation of some in the media to push this absurd notion that Republicans support the repeal of laws passed by Americans to protect marriage." -Hate group leader and Vatican stooge Brian Brown.

RELATED: The Times reporter in question has explained her mistake, which was not, as Brown claims, part of a vast anti-Jesus conspiracy.
"Here's what happened," she e-mails. "A former district director for Marilyn Musgrave signed the brief, but her title was so long that it actually took up two lines, pushing the congresswoman's name onto a line all by itself. So when you read down the list, it looked like Ms. Musgrave had signed — when in fact she had not." Stolberg says she was "horrified" when she realized her mistake. "I corrected it immediately, called Ms. Musgrave and apologized, and she accepted. A good lesson in journalism: Check everything twice, and we are only human."

Editorial Of The Day

The New York Times on Obama's Prop 8 brief:
The legal analysis advanced by the Obama administration leads inexorably to the conclusion that all attempts to ban same-sex marriage are inherently unconstitutional. But the administration stopped short of declaring that truth, recognized earlier this week even by the Republicans’ brief. In fact, the administration said the court need not consider the constitutionality of marriage bans beyond the context of this particular scheme.  We don’t know why the administration did not take that step. Perhaps it was to allow Mr. Obama to go on asserting that the issue of same-sex marriage should generally be left up to the states. We hope the justices recognize the broader truth that the Constitution does not tolerate denying gay people the right to wed in any state.

John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts

The Irish Times writes today about openly HIV+ singer and songwriter John Grant:
There are confessional songwriters, and then there is John Grant. The Michigan-born, Colorado-raised musician had been celebrated as a lyricist throughout his tenure with The Czars, the band he fronted for 10 years until their split in 2004. Yet it was the release of his astounding solo debut, Queen of Denmark, in 2010 that brought brought his music – and his propensity for pouring out his heart in it – to a wider audience. Queen of Denmark laid Grant’s soul bare, and three years later it’s still buck-naked and trembling with cold on Pale Green Ghosts, the follow-up to that inordinately successful record. In real life, Grant is just as open and honest as his songs would suggest; so much so, that our 75-minute-long interview seems to resemble a therapy session at times.
Anybody else getting a Dead Can Dance vibe?

ABC Buys How To Survive A Plague For Possible Mini-Series Development

Rights to the Oscar-nominated How To Survive A Plague have been purchased by ABC with the intent of turning the gripping documentary into a mini-series.
France's widely acclaimed doc, which he co-wrote and directed, focuses on two coalitions -- ACT UP and Treatment Action Group (TAG) -- whose activism and innovation helped turn AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to real-world patients in record time. Ideally, the scripted adaptation, which is in its early days of development, will go broader and deeper. “We know we’d like it to be an extended story that’s not just about AIDS and what AIDS wrought but about this tremendous civil rights movement that grew from the ashes of AIDS and the dawn of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movement,” France tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The casting should prove quite interesting.

Girls Gone Bankrupt

Some feminists probably find this news very satisfying.
The company behind the “Girls Gone Wild” videos filed for bankruptcy to protect itself from a $10.3 million debt claimed by Steve Wynn’s Wynn Las Vegas LLC and a $5.8 million award won by a woman who says the company used naked images of her without permission. Last year, Wynn and his company won a slander lawsuit against Joe Francis, founder of the “Girls Gone Wild” franchise, which features college-age women in reality TV-style shows focused on drinking, stripping and sex. “The court finds that Francis made a knowing and intentional false and defamatory statement,” a Nevada judge ruled in April in awarding $7.5 million to Wynn and Wynn Las Vegas. Francis lied when he claimed he had proof that Wynn tricked high-end gamblers, the judge ruled.
Francis reportedly owns a personal jet and a $30M waterfront mansion among other personal holdings that may be used to satisfying the judgements against him.

Here's The President's Prop 8 Brief

SCOTUSblog has an analysis:
Much of the logic of the government’s brief — its first entry into the controversy over California’s Proposition 8 — could be read to support a right to marriage equality in every state, but it did not endorse that idea explicitly. [Snip] In essence, the position of the federal government would simultaneously give some support to marriage equality while showing some respect for the rights of states to regulate that institution.

What the brief endorsed is what has been called the “eight-state solution” — that is, if a state already recognizes for same-sex couples all the privileges and benefits that married couples have (as in the eight states that do so through “civil unions”) those states must go the final step and allow those couples to get married. The argument is that it violates the Constitution’s guarantee of legal equality when both same-sex and opposite-sex couples are entitled to the same marital benefits, but only the opposite-sex couples can get married.

The eight states that apparently would be covered by such a decision are: California (whose Proposition 8, which denies marriage to couples who already have all of the other marital benefits, would fall), Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, and Rhode Island.

Homocons Join GOP Prop 8 Brief

Yesterday we learned that about 75 GOP figures had signed onto a joint Supreme Court brief supporting the overturn of Prop 8.  Today we get the full list of names and note that a number of  well-known homocons have signed on. Most notable, of course, is that the brief itself bears the name of former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, the homocon mastermind of 21 successful anti-gay state ballot initiatives during the Bush II administration.

Other homocon brief signees include former Log Cabin head R. Clark Cooper, former UN ambassadors spokesman Richard Grenell (who spent two hot minutes with the Romney campaign before getting canned), former Log Cabin head Patrick Guerriero, former Rep. Michael Huffington,  former Rep. Jim Kolbe, and former MA state Rep. Richard Tisei, who ran unsuccessfully for the US House last year.

Bishops Order Priests To Encourage Attendance At NOM's Hate March

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a letter to all American dioceses that orders every parish to consider encouraging parishioners to attend NOM's hate march on the Supreme Court.
We are grateful for this opportunity to express support for the Marriage March and to encourage participation in this event. We realize that the march will occur during the solemn days of Holy Week, but we ask that you consider promoting this event in your diocese and parishes and encourage participation where possible.  The march will be a significant opportunity to promote and defend marriage and the good of our nation, to pray for our Supreme Court justices, and to stand in solidarity with people of good will. It also complements well the bishops’ Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty (http://www.usccb.org/life-marriage-liberty) that was approved last November. This is a decisive time for marriage in our country. We are deeply grateful for any support you can offer for this march.
Pretending that he himself is not a defacto Vatican employee, Brian Brown reacts: "We welcome the active participation and support of the Catholic Church in the march."

Teabaggers Target Rep. Aaron Schock

The ultra right-wing Club For Growth announced today that they will put up a primary challenger to closet case Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) because he isn't teabagger enough. After citing a litany of "liberal votes" made by Schock, the group closes their letter to him with this:
Congressman Schock, your liberal record speaks for itself. You understandably would like to hide the reality that you are a pro-stimulus spending, pro-ObamaCare, pro-debt limit increase, pro-tax increase, pro-labor “Republican”, but all the evidence points to that very fact. Your actions as a member of Congress matter, and because of you and your votes, taxes and debt are higher, ObamaCare is funded, labor bosses receive their handouts and both your constituents and Americans have less economic freedom. Congressman Schock, please stop pretending to be a fiscal conservative. The voters of Illinois’s 18th Congressional District are not blind: they can tell when someone is pretending to be something they’re not.
Interesting last line, eh? Schock's chief of staff fires back: "Congressman Schock was elected by—and works for—the over 700,000 constituents in the 18th District—not unelected special interest groups based in Washington."  Some of the comments at the above link are quite amusing.

NFL Players Chris Kluwe And Brendon Ayanbadejo File SCOTUS Brief On Prop 8

NFL stars and LGBT allies Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo today filed a joint Supreme Court brief in support of the overturn of Proposition 8.  From the brief's introduction:
Sports figures receive a celebrity status that influences a large majority of the American population. For far too long, professional sports have been a bastion of bigotry, intolerance, and small-minded prejudice toward sexual orientation, just as they had been to racial differences decades earlier. That is finally changing, and changing drastically. The NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA, at the league level, team level, and individual level, are finally speaking out against homophobia and intolerance of LBGTQ individuals. More and more of us realize that using demeaning slur words like “faggot,” “queer,” and “gay” can have serious, negative consequences. Not necessarily consequences for us. Instead, consequences for the children and adults who look up to us as role models and leaders. Consequences for children and adults who mimic our behavior when they interact with others. And consequences that can be severe, long-lasting, and not infrequently lead to suicide and other serious harm.
Interestingly, the brief also cites the lyrics of top-selling hip-hop artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Hit the link and read more.

FRC's Prayer Of The Day

From the Family Research Council's prayer team:
Pray that pro-family leaders, Democrat and Republican, and our sharp pro-family lawyers will rise to neutralize this blitz campaign to confuse Americans and the Court. Continue to pray for each member of the Supreme Court and for those will argue the case for Biblical, natural marriage. May God extend mercy to America amid this onslaught of evil (Josh 1:6-8; Pr 28:4; Is 59:19; Acts 4:31; 1 Tim 2:1-8).

Pray for a sweeping awakening among Americans and in the High Court that will turn the tide in the marriage argument for righteousness. May the right of states to govern themselves and to uphold marriage be reaffirmed and may DOMA be preserved, intact! May pro-family business and governmental leaders from both parties arise successfully to defend marriage in Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota and across the land (2 Chr 7:14; Ps 14:34; 82:1-5; Joel 1:14; 2:12-18; Lk 18:1-8).
We are evil. And they are not a hate group. (Via Good As You)

HomoQuotable - Andrew Sullivan

"The damage Benedict XVI has done to the Catholic Church and the papacy may be far from over. All I can say about yesterday’s developments is that they seem potentially disastrous and also indicative to me of something truly weird going on underneath all of this. Benedict’s handsome male companion will continue to live with him, while working for the other Pope during the day. Are we supposed to think that’s, well, a normal arrangement?  This man – clearly in some kind of love with Ratzinger (and vice-versa) will now be working for the new Pope as secretary in the day and spending the nights with the Pope Emeritus. This is not the Vatican. It’s Melrose Place." - Andrew Sullivan, implying that the Pope is gay. And yes, Bill Donohue's head has already exploded.

Gay MS Mayoral Candidate Murdered

Marco McMillian, who some say was the first openly gay political candidate in the history of Mississippi, was found murdered yesterday.  McMillian was running for mayor of the small town of Clarksdale.
Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith said the body of 34-year-old Marco McMillian was found on the Mississippi River levee Wednesday at about 10 a.m. The sheriff's office said Wednesday in a news release on its Facebook page that a person of interest was in custody, but had not been formally charged. The department also said authorities had been looking for McMillian since a man crashed the candidate's car into another vehicle on Tuesday. McMillian was not in the car. The sheriff's office said deputies responded to the two-car crash on U.S. Highway 49 South near the Coahoma and Tallahatchie county lines on Tuesday about 8 a.m. Will Rooker, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, declined to release other details. He said the investigation is ongoing.
In 2004, Ebony Magazine named McMillian as one of its "30 up-and-coming African Americans" under age 30 for his HIV activism.

Tony Perkins: We Don't Hate You

"At FRC, we hate no one. We actively affirm God's love for everyone. We also affirm what we believe to be sound theological and sociological reasons for upholding sexual morality and preserving marriage as the institution between one man and one woman. Is this hate? Most reasonable people would say no. Evidently the Southern Poverty Law Center disagrees, and under the guise of 'anti-bullying,' the SPLC is willingly fomenting hostility and violence that is jeopardizing the lives of the people with whom they disagree, just to advance their cause.

"It is time the public sees the SPLC for what they really are – bullies intent on intimidating and silencing those who oppose their anti-parent, anti-Christian policies." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, who routinely calls all gay men potential pedophiles, whose group has called for the imprisonment of gay Americans, and whose group lobbied in support of Uganda's proposed gay death penalty, once again lying that the FRC is only on the SPLC's hate list because of marriage.

GOProud Rides The Marriage Train

It was only last month that GOProud finally made the "major announcement" that they now support same-sex marriage after endorsing the presidential candidate who signed a hate group's pledge to place a ban on it in the federal constitution. And don't forget that their officially released 2011 agenda included opposition to "federal marriage reform." (A position now conveniently zapped from their website.)  GOProud is now obviously feeling safer with so many GOP figures coming out in support of the cause. They're totally heroes! Move over, Rosa Parks!

Olson & Boies Announce Book Deal

Next year, when all the dust has hopefully settled, Prop 8 attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies will publish a jointly-written book about their battle for marriage equality.
"Our collective journey tells of a crucial and historical civil rights movement that brings us closer to the ideals on which our country was founded," Boies, 71, said in a statement issued by Viking. Olson, 72, said he and Boies between them have "nearly 100 years in the law."  "We have never handled a more important, dramatic and emotionally compelling challenge," he said in a statement. Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), promised the Boies-Olson book will be a "dramatic, intimate, and informed account of this historic issue."
The book's title: "A Just Cause: Law, Love, and the Case for Marriage Equality."  It should be out sometime in mid-2014. (Tipped by JMG reader George)

Quote Of The Day - Phil Horgan

"A key teaching of Christianity is to hate the sin, but love the sinner. We incarcerate convicted persons for their crimes, not out of hate for the individual. But with Whatcott, the Supreme Court of Canada has stated that criticism of behaviour can be treated as potentially hateful speech against the minority. Will criticism of activities at gay pride parades be treated similarly? Will criticism of certain homosexual sexual activities be now conflated as an example of hate speech of an individual or minority? This conflation of behaviour with the person or group, is a proposition at odds with most religious teachings, and of concern coming from our highest court." - Phil Horgan, president of the Catholic Civil Rights League, reacting to yesterday's unanimous ruling that upheld hate speech laws.

MN Marriage Bill Introduced

Openly gay Minnesota state Sen. Scott Dibble today introduced his marriage equality bill. The full text of the bill is here.
“This is a day that Minnesotans should be very proud of," said Sen. Scott Dibble, a Minneapolis Democrat who is a chief sponsor of the bill. "Our challenge in coming weeks is that we really have this discussion with renewed energy, about why marriage matters, why family matters." The new legislative push is the culmination of a 10 year fight over the issue, beginning with proposals to further restrict marriage solely to heterosexual unions. Sensing a national, tidal shift on the issue, advocates now believe this is the year Minnesota will join fewer than a dozen states that have legalized same-sex marriage. The new proposal would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, but ensures that religious leaders who are opposed are not forced to wed same-sex couples. Only faiths and religious groups that welcome same-sex unions could perform the ceremonies.
In a news video at the first link above, GOP state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen blathers that homosexuality is a choice and that "the concept that you are born that way is a lie." Ho-hum.  If Dibble's bill is successful in both chambers (and that is far from certain at this point) same-sex weddings would commence in August. (Tipped by JMG reader Larson)

Gay Pianist Van Cliburn Dies At 78

Renowned concert pianist Van Cliburn, who in 1998 was unsuccessfully sued for palimony by his former partner in a case that made global headlines, has died of bone cancer at the age of 78.
Mr. Cliburn, a Texan, was a lanky 23-year-old when he clinched the gold medal in the inaugural year of the Tchaikovsky competition, and the feat, in Moscow, was viewed as an American triumph over the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war. He became a cultural celebrity of pop-star dimensions and brought overdue attention to the musical assets of his native land.

When Mr. Cliburn returned to New York, he was given a ticker-tape parade in Lower Manhattan, which offered the sight of about 100,000 people lining the streets and cheering a classical musician. In a ceremony at City Hall, Mayor Robert F. Wagner proclaimed that Mr. Cliburn’s accomplishment was “a dramatic testimonial to American culture” and that “with his two hands, Van Cliburn struck a chord which has resounded around the world, raising our prestige with artists and music lovers everywhere.”
Here's his most famous piece.

One Million Moms Vs Amazon

What took them so long?
Dear Joe, Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite commercial promotes gay marriage. Instead of Amazon remaining neutral in the culture war while showcasing how their product has no glare even at the beach, they chose to promote sin. The commercial starts off with a guy and a girl sitting on the beach with their Kindles. At the end, the girl mentions her husband is getting her a drink, and the guy says, "So is mine." They both turn around to see their 'husbands' waiting for their drinks. Both men at the bar wave to their spouse. Homosexuality is wrong just like other sexual sins of heterosexual sex before marriage, adultery, and pornography, but Amazon has chosen to promote gay marriage in their advertisement. This ad has been airing during programs such as "American Idol" when children are likely watching. These commercials are airing nationwide and are damaging to the minds of young children and adolescents.
Their attached form letter demands that Amazon "pull this commercial immediately" or "at least" edit out the ending that reveals that the man is gay.

LAUNCHED: Pet Food Stamps

A New York-based non-profit has launched a program they are calling Pet Food Stamps, which will ship pet food to impoverished families who might otherwise be forced to surrender furry family members to animal shelters, or worse, release them to fend for themselves on the streets. In order to qualify for the program, pet owners must document that they are on public assistance.  From the group's website:
There are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamps, many with dogs or cats, who simply cannot afford to feed their animals, and these cherished companions are dropped off at animal shelters where they will most likely be put to sleep. As more families struggle with difficult choices like paying the rent or buying food, some have to choose between keeping their pet and putting food on the table. The Pet Food Stamps program, due to the generosity of contributors and patrons, are able to eliminate that heart-wrenching decision by making sure these pet owners are given free monthly home delivery of all necessary food supplies to maintain the health and vitality of their pets.
Initial reaction to the program has been so strong that the group's website crashed yesterday as thousands of animal lovers attempted to make donations. Totally unsurprisingly, the program has been denounced in some corners of Teabagistan as furthering "the entitlement mindset of the takers." Over at the wingnut Townhall, they're even wondering when Pet Food Stamps will become an official federal program. Eye roll.
