Gary Johnson, Libertarian Spoiler?

Will Libertarian Party presidential candidate siphon off enough Romney votes to swing a few states back into blue territory for President Obama? Fox News worries about a reverse Ralph Nader for the GOP:
The Libertarian Party is now touting that possibility. An emailed statement from the organization earlier this week carried a rather sensational subject line: "Libertarian Presidential Candidate Gov. Gary Johnson Could Deprive Mitt Romney of 5 battleground states, 74 Electoral Votes, 27% of the Electoral Votes needed to win in 2012." Libertarians reasoned Johnson, then, "could determine the winner" of the election. It's impossible to gauge at this point what effect Johnson could have, but of course it's not unprecedented for a third-party candidate to tilt the scales. In 1992, third-party candidate Ross Perot won roughly 19 percent of the popular vote, which many people think cut into GOP incumbent George H.W. Bush's take and put Democratic candidate Bill Clinton in the Oval Office with just 43 percent of the vote. Though Johnson is polling barely above 5 percent nationwide, Romney and Obama are separated by single digits in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina and Virginia.
The above-linked article adds another wrinkle regarding Colorado: "The survey found Obama leading Romney 49-43 percent, but his lead was cut to 46-42 when voters were given the Johnson choice." (Tipped by JMG readers Wayne and PGHMike)

Afternoon View - East River Bike Path

Today was the final Summer Streets for the year and Farmboy C and I biked from the Upper East Side to the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, then toured through Chinatown to the Bowery for brunch. We cut through the East Village on the way home, stopping for Mermaid cones at Big Gay Ice Cream before pausing to watch some Fringe Festival socialist street theater near Thompkins Square Park. Then it was back uptown via the bike path that hugs the East River. The weather was cool and perfect despite a dark drizzly start.

NEW YORK CITY: Six Pussy Riot Protesters Arrested At Russian Consulate

Six supporters of imprisoned Russian punkers Pussy Riot were arrested on Manhattan's Upper East Side yesterday after protesting outside of the Russian consulate.
The protest by about 30 people, several wearing Pussy Riot's signature bright-colored balaclavas, was the latest in a wave of demonstrations around the world supporting the punk rockers sentenced earlier by a Moscow court to two years behind bars. US-based sympathizers gathered outside the Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox church and the nearby Russian consulate to sing punk songs and wave placards critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the powerful Russian church, which has close links to the Kremlin. "Unholy Trinity," one placard read, listing Putin, the judge who presided over the rockers' trial in Moscow, and the Orthodox Church's Patriarch Kirill. I'm here to express my outrage and to spread the word to people who don't know what's going on," said Russian-American Xenia Grubstein, 31, wearing a purple balaclava. The peaceful protest ran into a heavy police presence outside the Russian consulate and at least six people were arrested for blocking traffic or, under an obscure New York law, for wearing face masks, an AFP reporter said.
Those not arrested later joined a larger crowd for a protest in Times Square where the NYPD did not apparently object to their masks.

CNN's Religion Blog Gets It Wrong

In a post on their Belief Blog, CNN's Michael Pearson writes:
In 2010, the FRC was widely denounced after blogger Joe My God published documents that appeared to show the FRC provided $25,000 for lobbying efforts to defeat a congressional resolution expressing opposition to a proposed law in Uganda, which called for the imprisonment of gays and lesbians and the death penalty for those accused of spreading disease and other acts of "aggravated homosexuality." The story was picked up by several news organizations and still appears in Internet denunciations of the group. In a 2010 statement, the FRC said that it did not support the Uganda bill or the death penalty for gays and lesbians. In a statement published at the time, the group said it only wanted lawmakers to "remove sweeping and inaccurate assertions that homosexual conduct is internationally recognized as a fundamental human right." Not long after that controversy, the SPLC added the FRC to its list of hate groups.
While the SPLC's November 2010 announcement of adding the FRC to their anti-gay hate groups list did come five months after the above-referenced JMG post, there is zero indication that my post influenced their decision. In fact, there is not one mention of Uganda on the SPLC's lengthy recounting of anti-gay actions and positions by the FRC.

If anything finally pushed the FRC onto its rightful place on the SPLC's list that year, it was their ferocious, ugly, and lie-filled campaign against the repeal of DADT and their relentless attempts to thwart anti-bullying laws all over the nation. All of those actions were infested with allegations and warnings of homosexual rape, pedophilia, and HIV transmission.

While our enemies may want to try to circle this entire debacle back to a single blog post from two years ago, something we've seen this week on Breitbart and elsewhere, don't let them get away with it. All of us here have seen hundreds of examples of why the Family Research Council has correctly been characterized as an anti-gay hate group. That's the fact that CNN and the rest of the mainstream media needs to understand.

Rage Against The Ryan Machine

Rage Against The Machine member Tom Morello is not thrilled that Paul Ryan loves his band's music. Via Rolling Stone:
Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn't understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn't understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine. Ryan claims that he likes Rage's sound, but not the lyrics. Well, I don't care for Paul Ryan's sound or his lyrics. He can like whatever bands he wants, but his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage.

I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings! Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta "rage" in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions.
Suh-NAP! Wingnuts are piling on via a Twitter meme against Morello launched by Breitbart editor Dana Loesch. I'm not much of a fan but the below track was fairly inescapable during my first year in San Francisco. Always reminds me of the Hole In The Wall.

Newspaper Correction

And it turns out that the part of the San Francisco Chronicle story that most enraged some local Catholics wasn't true. Sister Barbi Mitzah responds in the comments to the correction:
You only wrote about this and the made-up story because it sensationalizes your story. Personally, I've seen better journalism on a box of cheerios. Next time you want to write about the Sisters, I suggest you contact us DIRECTLY rather than make up a false story. I am sure you did this only to rescind it later on your blog. Nebraska Follows Jan Brewer's Lead

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman said yesterday that he too will deny driver's licenses and public benefits to young immigrants now eligible for deferred deportation status.
"They shouldn't be here if they're not here legally," Heineman told reporters. "That's the whole problem, and I've talked to you guys about this many, many times. When you don't secure the border, have a speedier technological way to legal immigration, and you won't address the issue that we've got 15 million illegal immigrants in the country right now, we end up with these situations."
Here's the statement from Heineman's official website:
“President Obama’s deferred action program to issue employment authorization documents to illegal immigrants does not make them legal citizens. The State of Nebraska will continue its practice of not issuing driver’s licenses, welfare benefits or other public benefits to illegal immigrants unless specifically authorized by Nebraska statute.”

Traditional Values Coalition: FRC Shooter Was Carrying Our Address When Arrested

The head of the Traditional Values Coalition, an anti-gay group that is equally as vile as the FRC, is claiming that shooter Floyd Corkins was arrested while carrying their address.
“Clearly we need added protection after this. My understanding is we were the next target,” says Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition. Traditional Values Coalition is located in the 100 block of C Street in southeast D.C. “It is frightening to be, to know that you are probably the next person on the list to be shot,” Lafferty says. “I am concerned for my staff.”
NPR has more on Lafferty's claim:
Traditional Values Coalition President Andrea Lafferty said FBI agents visited her group's Capitol Hill offices hours after the Wednesday morning shooting as part of their investigation. The next day, she said, members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force came by and confirmed that "our information was in his pocket," including the location of the group's offices. "I was stunned," Lafferty told The Associated Press, adding that she believes her group may have been targeted. It wasn't immediately clear if that was the case. An FBI representative could not be immediately reached for comment late Friday.
As Lafferty notes in the NPR article, her group has been on the SPLC's hate list for much longer than the FRC, which was added in 2010. Lafferty claims she's gotten no response to requests for federal protection: "Under this Justice Department, Christians are a very low priority on their lists of concerns."

RELATED:
The SPLC provides some background on Lafferty and the group's founder, her father Lou Sheldon.
The group has at times enjoyed remarkable access to the halls of power — during the George W. Bush Administration, Sheldon and Lafferty visited the White House a combined 69 times, meeting personally with Bush in eight of the visits. But that does not mean that it has not long had a record of extreme gay-bashing. In 1985, Sheldon suggested forcing AIDS victims into “cities of refuge.” In 1992, columnist Jimmy Breslin said that Sheldon told him that “homosexuals are dangerous. They proselytize. They come to the door, and if your son answers and nobody is there to stop it, they grab the son and run off with him. They steal him. They take him away and turn him into a homosexual.” Sheldon later denied that he made the comments, but his website today includes strikingly similar language: “[S]ince homosexuals can’t reproduce, they will simply go after your children for seduction and conversion to homosexuality.” Elsewhere, it claims that “[t]he effort to push adult/child sex … is part of the overall homosexual movement.”
Last year the Traditional Values Coalition claimed that the passage of the federal Hate Crimes Act had literally outlawed Christianity in the United States. They then sent fundraising flyers to horrified seniors and raised buckets of money on that ridiculous lie.

Friday Document Dump

It used to be that one of the oldest political tricks in the book was to release potentially damaging information after the close of business on a Friday when most mainstream journalists are gone for the weekend. Doesn't quite work as well in the digital age. Via Boston Globe:
Paul Ryan and his wife paid an effective tax rate of 20 percent last year and 15.9 percent the year before, according to tax returns the presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee released late on Friday afternoon. Ryan’s tax returns, released through Mitt Romney’s campaign, show that he paid $64,764 in taxes on $323,416 of adjusted gross income in 2011. He and his wife paid $34,233 in taxes on $215,417 of adjusted gross income in 2010. [snip] anna Ryan inherited a trust, worth between $1 million and $5 million, after her mother’s death in 2010. Ryan, as well as Romney’s campaign, declined to say how many of his tax returns were provided for the vice presidential selection vetting process - and whether that number differs from the number they’re providing for voters to vet. Romney, who was being considered as a running mate by Senator John McCain in 2008, provided 23 years worth of tax returns to McCain’s campaign.
So far nobody's reporting anything unusual about Ryan's returns other than he's released his and his running mate hasn't. Maybe the GOP is hoping that point will fade away over the weekend.

Breitbart Headline Of The Day

Another day, another Breitbart distortion that they've blown up into "Obama calls Navy SEALS 'gutless.'" What's really going on is that there's a small group of former Navy SEALS whose leader has just come out as a birther, calling President Obama a socialist who was raised by communists in a foreign country and saying that the president is "trying to hog all the glory" for the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

In response to that story, a Media Matters blogger tweeted: "Former Navy SEALs don’t have guts to admit they’re running a GOP, anti-Obama campaign." Which Breitbart is now spinning this way:
It’s a classy move. But what else would you expect from an Obama administration flunky who thinks that slandering military members is no problem so long as Obama gets re-elected? What else would you expect from a movement that tries to prevent the counting of military ballots to ensure Democratic re-election? What else would you expect from Media Matters?
You'll note that the above Breitbart headline doesn't match the post's URL, showing that editors changed it after its first posting to add Obama's name. And now every wingnut is gleefully tweeting: "GASP! Obummer calls hero Navy Seals GUTLESS!1!!1!"

Golf clap, Breitbart.

Archdiocese Of Portland Offers Defense Loan To Child-Molesting Priest

The Archdiocese of Portland has offered an "open-ended" loan to the Oregon priest who last week was witnessed running down the street in his underwear as he tried to capture the 12 year-old boy he'd just molested.
Archbishop John G. Vlazny approved the loan to Perez this week, Archdiocese of Portland spokesman Bud Bunce said Friday. Police said Perez chased a 12-year-old boy down a Woodburn street early Monday while dressed only in his underwear. "It's available if he needs it," Bunce said of the loan. Bunce said he didn't have details on the loan or how it would work. Parishioners in Woodburn have also begun to raise money for Perez's defense, he said.
SNAP knows what the loan is really about.
David Clohessy, director of the Survivor Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, said the church will cover the cost of defense for priests "in the overwhelming majority of cases," but it's usually not called a loan. "I don't think they've ever called it a loan and, frankly, we think that's pretty disingenuous," Clohessy said. "On a priest's salary, there's virtually no chance that it'll ever be repaid, especially if he's found guilty." The Archdiocese of Portland was the first in the nation to declare bankruptcy in 2004, just hours before two civil trials on sex abuse allegations were set to begin.

The diocese emerged from bankruptcy in 2007 with a $50 million settlement of more than 175 claims. Another $20 million was set aside to handle future claims. The offer to cover Perez's defense costs was likely a strategic move, Clohessy said. "We suspect the goal here is to intimidate others who were hurt by Father Perez or other clerics into staying silent or settling quietly," Clohessy said. "The signal he's sending is, 'Don't think this is going to be easy.'

Now Tony Perkins Blames Obama

"What I would call an attack on religious freedom is trickling down in our country. It’s not just isolated to the administration but it’s as if the President and his administration’s indifference towards religious freedom has really created an open season all across this country. In fact next week down in Tampa as the Republican National Committee begins its work on its platform we’ll be working with Liberty Institute and we’ll be releasing a study that shows this increased hostility towards religious freedom in this country." - Tony Perkins, who sits on the RNC platform committee.

MAINE: Marriage Repeal Leader Gets Gun To Protect Himself From Murderous Gays

Maine's weirdo marriage repeal leader Michael Heath has told the press that he's applied for a concealed weapon permit so that none of them gays try to murder him.
Heath continued, "If Maine doesn't end this decades long conflict over the evil of sodomy with an overwhelming NO vote in November we can expect to see this sort of violence in Maine in the near future. Homosexuality can lead to the most horrific and violent consequences in individuals and society. The twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of it." Heath is awaiting receipt of his concealed weapons permit from the Maine State Police. He claimed it is the responsibility of all good men to be prepared to protect innocence from evil. Force must be met with force so that innocent people are not harmed.
Next month Heath is the keynote speaker for Maine BeastFest, an annual event in which manly men gather alone in the woods to hunt and eat wild animals. In the nude. Followed by a campfire circle-jerk. (Via Good As You)

RUSSIA: Anti-Gay Nuts Sue Madonna For $10M Cuz Now They Can't Have Babies

Hilarious.
"She (Madonna) had been warned with words that she should behave in line with the law and she ignored it. So we will speak in the language of money," said Darya Dedova, one of the 10 activists who filed the lawsuit in a St Petersburg court. "Of course, it is difficult to measure moral damages and suffering but maybe people who earn money regardless of moral rules will better understand this," Dedova said. She added if they won the case, the money would be sent to orphanages. "Maybe someone does not see the link but after Madonna's concert maybe some boy becomes gay, some girl becomes lesbian, fewer children are born as a result and this big country cannot defend its borders - for me it causes moral suffering," said Alexei Kolotkov, another of the activists who filed the suit.
Yeah, good luck with that.

Mattel Launches Drag Queen Barbie

This is not, surprisingly, from The Onion. Global Grind reports:
Mattel has announced plans to produce their first ever Drag Queen Barbie in collaboration with the New York City-based design duo The Blonds, who are responsible for dressing some of the biggest names around, including Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. The gender bender doll called ‘The Blonds Blond Diamond Barbie Doll’ doesn't come equipped with detachable lady parts or a Ken bump, it is simply a regular Barb that takes after the cross dressing Phillipe Blond of the NYC design duo, and we think it is pretty darn fab. The drag queen doll is dressed in a diamond encrusted mini dress with a floor sweeping faux fur coat (take note!) glitter pumps and over the top makeup. The doll is set to hit the shelves just in time for Christmas. Don't end up on Santa's naughty list, because this Barbie costs a pretty penny at $125.
Looks like regular Barbie to me. This guy agrees.

FLASHBACK: Federal Election Commission Fines Campaign Tony Perkins Managed For Payment To KKK Grand Wizard David Duke

Read the entire ruling. The FEC originally fined the campaign $82,600, the same amount of the payment to David Duke, but the fine was reduced after mediation. The fine, it should be noted, was for attempting to cloak the payment on federally required campaign expenditure forms. It is not against the rules to buy mailing lists from the KKK or anybody else. You just have to say you did.

Paul Ryan: Those Five Times I Asked For Stimulus Millions Were By Accident

Seriously.
Mr. Ryan said in the television interview that he did not recall writing the letters. Later, his office issued a statement that he had since checked into the letters. “They were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled,’’ he said in the statement. “This is why I didn’t recall the letters earlier. But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that. Regardless, it’s clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy, and now the President is asking to do it all over again.’’

John McCain: Obama Should Replace Joe Biden With Hillary Clinton

John McCain says that President Obama should kick Joe Biden off the ticket in favor of Hillary Clinton. He adds that Clinton wouldn't accept because....
McCain said Obama would be “wise” to replace Biden with Clinton, but said Clinton probably would not accept. "But that's not going to happen, obviously, for a whole variety of reasons, including the fact I'm not sure if I were Hillary Clinton I'd want to be on that team,” he said, according to The Hill. “I think her ambitions, very frankly, are for 2016.” McCain also said Obama should be held accountable for his campaign’s actions. “He should be held accountable, the Obama administration should be held accountable for this ad that basically alleges that Mitt Romney is responsible for the tragic death of a man’s wife,” McCain said.
Clinton said last year that she may retire once the president is reelected but has been mum on that topic of late.

Geller writes on her Atlas Shrugs blog:
In an unprecedented move, the city of San Francisco is placing ads right next to every one of our pro-Israel ads on San Francisco Muni buses, saying (according to CBS San Francisco) "Muni doesn't support this message." This is unprecedented in the history of outdoor advertising. This is the manifestation of Sharia in Western society. Any war on innocent civilians is savage. FRC President Tony Perkins Supported Former KKK Leader David Duke And Louisiana's White Supremacists

I've mentioned this many times before, but it's certainly worth mentioning again this week. From an SPLC article I've excerpted here before:
In 1996, while managing the U.S. Senate campaign of Woody Jenkins against Mary Landrieu, Perkins paid $82,500 to use the mailing list of former Klan chieftain David Duke. The campaign was fined $3,000 (reduced from $82,500) after Perkins and Jenkins filed false disclosure forms in a bid to hide their link to Duke. Five years later, on May 17, 2001, Perkins gave a speech to the Louisiana chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), a white supremacist group that has described black people as a “retrograde species of humanity.” Perkins claimed not to know the group’s ideology at the time, but it had been widely publicized in Louisiana and the nation, because in 1999 — two years before Perkins’ speech to the CCC — Republican House Speaker Trent Lott had been embroiled in a national scandal over his ties to the group. GOP chairman Jim Nicholson then urged Republicans to avoid the CCC because of its “racist views.” The Duke incident surfaced again in local press in 2002, when Perkins ran for the Republican nomination for the Senate, dooming his campaign to a fourth-place finish in the primaries.
From the Council Of Conservative Citizen's statement of principles:
We believe in the traditional family as the basic unit of human society and morality, and we oppose all efforts by the state and other powers to weaken the structure of the American family through toleration of sexual licentiousness, homosexuality and other perversions, mixture of the races, pornography in all forms, and subversion of the authority of parents.
Bolding is motherfucking mine. Not one cable news network or mainstream newspaper has mentioned Perkins' racist past since the FRC shooting.

UPDATE: Here is a PDF of the Federal Election Commission ruling that FRC president Tony Perkins violated campaign expenditure disclosure law when he tried to hide his payment to KKK Grand Wizard David Duke.

New Study: Christians Aren't Trying Hard Enough To Convert Other Americans

The Christian Post laments a new study which shows that only 39% of evangelicals have tried to convert a sinner in the last six months.
A majority of churchgoers in the U.S. believe that it's essential to share their faith with non-believers, but a large number of those are not doing so, according to a recent study of American Protestants conducted by LifeWay Research. "When it comes to discipleship, churchgoers struggle most with sharing Christ with non-Christians," says LifeWay spokesperson Jon D. Wilke. The study found that 80 percent of those who attend church one or more times a month believe they have a personal responsibility to share their faith, but 61 percent have not told another person about how to become a Christian in the previous six months.
The study is meant "mobilize the troops" to get in the face of non-believers.

RUSSIA: Appeals Court Upholds Moscow Gay Pride Ban For Next 100 Years

Moscow's top court has upheld a century-long ban on gay pride events after an appeal from the nation's most well-known LGBT activist.
"On Thursday, August 16, the Moscow City Court upheld a ban imposed by the Moscow government on gay pride parades for the next 100 years, from March 2012 to May 2112," Moscow gay pride parade activist Nikolay Alexeyev told Interfax on Friday. The court declined Alexeyev's cassation appeal seeking a retrial of the case by the Moscow City Court Presidium. "We will appeal against the actions taken by the Russian authorities, which have banned gay pride parades in Moscow for the next 100 years, in the European Court of Human Rights in the nearest future. Thus, we will get the invalidation of the bans not only on past, but also future gay pride parades in the Russian capital," Alexeyev said. He also said he intends to inform the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe of this decision, as the Committee will study the implementation of the European court's decision on Alexeyev vs. Russia, which states that bans on gay pride parades in Moscow in 2006-2008 were illegitimate, in September.

UKRAINE: Spongebob Is Gay, Ban Him

Ukraine's government is preparing to ban obviously gay Spongebob Squarepants and other dangerous cartoon characters.
The popular cartoon character SpongeBob Squarepants is homosexual, according to a study by the National Commission for the protection of morality in Ukraine, the Ukrainian newspaper Ukraínskaya Pravda reported on Thursday. The Commission has been studying some of the most popular animated series on Ukrainian television and is set to propose a countrywide ban on some of them, claiming they “present a real threat to children”. Series like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Pokemon, The Teletubbies and Futurama are “projects aimed at the destruction of the family, and the promotion of drugs and other vices.”

RUSSIA: Pussy Riot Found Guilty, Sentenced To Two Years In Prison

Female punkers and anti-Putin activists Pussy Riot were found guilty of "hooliganism" in a Moscow court today.
Judge Marina Syrova said the women had "crudely undermined social order" during their action in February. The women say their "punk prayer" was a political act in protest against the Russian Orthodox Church leader's support of President Vladimir Putin. Prosecutors are seeking a three-year jail sentence. The verdict is still being read out. Judge Syrova said Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, had offended the feelings of Orthodox believers and shown a "complete lack of respect". "Tolokonnikova, Alyokhina and Samutsevich committed hooliganism - in other words, a grave violation of public order," she said. The judge quoted prosecution witnesses as saying the act had been one of blasphemy, not politics.
The band's arrest spawned solidarity protests around the world and support from major pop stars such as Pete Townsend, Bjork, and Madonna, who denounced the Russian government from the stage at last week's concert in Moscow.

UPDATE: Pussy Riot has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Concerned Women Are Concernstipated About Filthy Cosmopolitan Magazine

Concerned Women for America write:
Ladies, whether you’re my age, older, or younger, stop reading that filth! Don’t fill your heads and thought lives with the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine. The hyped-up “articles” amount to little more than cheap marketing — shock value, nothing more. So take your hard-earned money — and what’s left of your innocence — and walk away. In the long run, you’ll be happy you didn’t trash your mind with explicit porn tips from a magazine who promotes the empowerment of women through “one-night stands.” The only results this type of lifestyle will yield is men leaving you once they find a “good girl” they want to settle down with. Yep, I said it. Act like a Cosmo girl, and they’ll take you to their beds, but they’ll never take you home to their mothers.

Billboard Of The Day

Having just won her court battle to place anti-Islam messages on NYC public transit, wingnut blogger Pam Geller begins with the above Metro-North campaign.
Paul Feiner, the Greenburgh Town Supervisor, tells the Daily Politics that he wants the MTA "to warn passengers that the ads could be upsetting and don't represent Metro-North's views or that of the community," noting, "There are many Muslims residing in Greenburgh and in our villages. They should not be discriminated against. the posters encourage hatred, discrimination and do not help the efforts to fight hate crimes." Feiner added that he wants the MTA to donate the ad profits to an anti-discrimination campaign, "I feel it's not a violation of free speech for Metro North to put up a competing sign and it's also not a violation of free speech if they donate the profits to an anti-defamation league or an organization that objects to hate crimes. I feel that it should be clear that the people of Metro North and the town do not support this message."

White Supremacist Kevin DeAnna Writes World Net Daily Article Supporting FRC

Failing to mention that he himself founded a white supremacist group, former Youth For Western Civilization president Kevin DeAnna has authored a World Net Daily article in support of the Family Research Council.
In a press conference in front of the council’s Washington headquarters, Perkins thanked political opponents who expressed their condolences after the attack by a man who had been volunteering at an LGBT center. But the FRC chief challenged them “to go a step further.” He also asked organizations that condemned the violence to “call for an end to the reckless rhetoric that I believe” led to the shooting. Perkins identified the Southern Poverty Law Center as responsible for the atmosphere, stating that it gave suspected gunman Floyd Lee Corkins “a license to shoot.” When challenged by reporters, Perkins expanded on his remarks and claimed that the SPLC’s designation of the Family Research Council as a “certified hate group … marginalizes individuals and organizations letting people feel free to go and do bodily harm to innocent people who are simply working and representing folks from all across this country.”
Last year a representative for Youth For Western Civilization joined a march of German nationalists and neo-Nazis.
Also represented was a small but growing nonprofit U.S. organization called Youth for Western Civilization. The group, which bills itself as "America's right-wing youth movement," bannered a photo of the Cologne rally on its website this week, accompanying an account that declared that "we will not falter nor fail in our attempt for the defense of the Western homeland." Youth for Western Civilization, which has chapters at only about 10 U.S. campuses, is just one of hundreds of conservative student organizations around the nation, far smaller than better-known college-based groups like Young Americans for Freedom and College Republicans. But its influence is bigger than its size, drawing the attention of large numbers of admirers — and critics — since it began organizing three years ago. Thanks to its discipline in advocating a small number of simply stated positions and a new-media-savvy communications strategy, YWC may be radically refreshing the template for political organizing in American higher education.
The Family Research Council and neo-Nazis are birds of a feather as Tony Perkins has twice spoken before a Louisiana white supremacy group that lists an end to "race mixing" among its "statement of principles."

Scamvangelist Bill Keller To File $100M Suit Against SPLC For Hate Group Label

Scamvangelist Bill Keller, who asks people to send him their gold jewelry so that he can convert it into "souls," says he will sue the Southern Poverty Law Center for listing his ministry as an anti-gay and anti-Muslim hate group. Keller has written a press release which he calls an "exclusive interview." (With himself, obviously.)
"The sad shooting the other day at the Family Research Council by a man who supports the radical homosexual agenda, was clearly fueled by the left wing group, the Southern Poverty Law Center. I receive at least 4-5 death threats a month for taking a Biblical stand on issues like homosexuality, the false religion of Islam and other cults, and the fact life begins at conception and choosing to end that life is nothing more than legalized infanticide." Keller went on, "Groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center give license to individuals who oppose a Biblical worldview to take whatever actions they deem fit, even acts of violence, to silence those they disagree with. Sadly, this intimidation has worked, because there are very few like myself who are willing to go into the mainstream media and promote Biblical Truth that a large percentage of society now rejects."
In March Keller claimed that gay celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres and Anderson Cooper were responsible for the suicide of gay Rutgers student Tyler Clementi. Keller, a graduate of Dead Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, is a convicted felon who spent three years in prison for insider trading. Below he attacks President Obama and Mitt Romney, saying that millions of people will go to hell if either is elected. He has launched a "Vote For Jesus" campaign.

Former MI Assistant Attorney General Ordered To Pay Gay Man $4.5M

Former Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shivrell has been ordered to pay a gay man $4.5M in damages after waging a vicious homophobic internet campaign against him.
The U.S. District Court jury ruled in favor of Christopher Armstrong, who claimed he suffered distress after a blog created by Andrew Shirvell accused him of enticing minors with alcohol and recruiting people to become homosexual. "I'm just incredibly humbled by what happened today," Armstrong told The Associated Press. "This is truly a victory — not just for myself, but for a lot of other kids out there." Shirvell, who was representing himself, said the jury award was "grossly excessive" for what was "clearly protected speech ... and activity." "This should have been thrown out," he said, adding that he plans to appeal. "Juries give short shrift to First Amendment rights." Armstrong accused Shirvell of defamation as well as emotional distress for his actions on the blog, in Facebook posts and during visits to the Ann Arbor campus. Then-Attorney General Mike Cox fired Shirvell in 2010 after he criticized Armstrong, who graduated last year.
Armstrong had offered to drop the suit if Shirvell would apologize.

NOM To Cash In On FRC Shooting?

SPLC Condemns Tony Perkins

Via press release and posted publicly to the Southern Poverty Law Center website. From SPLC Senior Fellow Mark Potak:
Yesterday’s attack on the Family Research Council and the shooting of a security guard there was a tragedy. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) deplores all violence, and our thoughts are with the wounded victim, Leo Johnson, his family and others who lived through the attack.

For more than 40 years, the SPLC has battled against political extremism and political violence. We have argued consistently that violence is no answer to problems in a democratic society, and we have strongly criticized all those who endorse such violence, whether on the political left or the political right.

But this afternoon, FRC President Tony Perkins attacked the SPLC, saying it had encouraged and enabled the attack by labeling the FRC a “hate group.” The attacker, Floyd Corkins, “was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center,” Perkins said. “I believe the Southern Poverty Law Center should be held accountable for their reckless use of terminology.”

Perkins’ accusation is outrageous. The SPLC has listed the FRC as a hate group since 2010 because it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about LGBT people — not, as some claim, because it opposes same-sex marriage. The FRC and its allies on the religious right are saying, in effect, that offering legitimate and fact-based criticism in a democratic society is tantamount to suggesting that the objects of criticism should be the targets of criminal violence.

As the SPLC made clear at the time and in hundreds of subsequent statements and press interviews, we criticize the FRC for claiming, in Perkins’ words, that pedophilia is “a homosexual problem” — an utter falsehood, as every relevant scientific authority has stated. An FRC official has said he wanted to “export homosexuals from the United States.” The same official advocated the criminalizing of homosexuality.

Perkins and his allies, seeing an opportunity to score points, are using the attack on their offices to pose a false equivalency between the SPLC’s criticisms of the FRC and the FRC’s criticisms of LGBT people. The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse — claims that are provably false. It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people.
Right on, SPLC!

When It Comes To Hate, NOM Is There

Box Turtle Bulletin writer Rob Tisinai ticks off just a few of the many, many times NOM has spread a message of hate against LGBT Americans.
  • When Reverend Ariel Torres Ortega stood on your stage as your guest at your rally and proclaimed that gays are “worthy to death,” NOM was there. But you didn’t condemn it at the event, on your website, or on your blog.
  • When Bishop Robert Evans announced gay marriage represents “the evil modern works of Satan,” NOM was there to spread the message.
  • When Kirk Cameron called same-sex marriage a threat to civilization, NOM was there to create a video helping him spread his views and dubbing him a “champion of marriage.”
  • When Fox News asked NOM founder Maggie Gallagher about a pageant contestant who said gays “shall surely be put to death and their blood shall be upon them,” Maggie was there, not to condemn the call for violence, but to praise “her courage in coming forward.”
  • When commenters on your own blog responded to your complaints about incendiary rhetoric by claiming homosexuality is “a perverted act, just like pedophilia,” and saying they understand why a country like Uganda would want to punish gays with the death penalty? Maggie Gallagher was there — but to defend her own self, not to condemn violence and vilification.
Regarding the first item, I was there in the Bronx that day last year when NOM's invited speaker declared that gay people should be put to death, first in Spanish, then in English via the onstage translator. When I heard the translation, I whipped my head around to see Brian Brown smiling and rocking his heels as he nodded in approval.
