LEAKED GOP MEMO: It's Time To Let Go Of Fighting Against Same-Sex Marriage

Politico has published a just-leaked memo from an insider on Dubya's 2004 reelection team. In the light of Obama's "evolution," this guy now says that GOP strategists should abandon the losing battle against same-sex marriage.

Background: in view of this week’s news on the same sex marriage issue, here is a summary of recent survey findings on same sex marriage:

  1. Support for same sex marriage has been growing and in the last few years support has grown at an accelerated rate with no sign of slowing down. A review of public polling shows that up to 2009 support for gay marriage increased at a rate of 1% a year. Starting in 2010 the change in the level of support accelerated to 5% a year. The most recent public polling shows supporters of gay marriage outnumber opponents by a margin of roughly 10% (for instance: NBC / WSJ poll in February / March: support 49%, oppose 40%).
  2. The increase in support is taking place among all partisan groups. While more Democrats support gay marriage than Republicans, support levels among Republicans are increasing over time. The same is true of age: younger people support same sex marriage more often than older people, but the trends show that all age groups are rethinking their position.
  3. Polling conducted among Republicans show that majorities of Republicans and Republican leaning voters support extending basic legal protections to gays and lesbians. These include majority Republican support for:
  4. Protecting gays and lesbians against being fired for reasons of sexual orientation
  5. Protections against bullying and harassment
  6. Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
  7. Right to visit partners in hospitals
  8. Protecting partners against loss of home in case of severe medical emergencies or death
  9. Legal protection in some form for gay couples whether it be same sex marriage or domestic partnership (only 29% of Republicans oppose legal recognition in any form).

Recommendation: A statement reflecting recent developments on this issue along the following lines:

“People who believe in equality under the law as a fundamental principle, as I do, will agree that this principle extends to gay and lesbian couples; gay and lesbian couples should not face discrimination and their relationship should be protected under the law. People who disagree on the fundamental nature of marriage can agree, at the same time, that gays and lesbians should receive essential rights and protections such as hospital visitation, adoption rights, and health and death benefits.

Coal Miner's Daughter: The Musical

Loretta Lynn has hand-picked pixie Zooey Deschanel to play the title role in the musical version of the story that won Sissy Spacek an Oscar.
Lynn, 80, unveiled plans for a musical adaptation of "Coal Miner's Daughter" during a Grand Ole Opry show at the Ryman Auditorium on Thursday night. Wearing one of her signature long-sleeve, floor-length dresses, the Country Music Hall of Fame member blew through four songs before bringing Deschanel onstage to sing the title tune. The announcement mirrored the way Lynn invited actress Spacek on the Opry stage in 1979 to reveal that Spacek would play her in an upcoming film. Spacek later won an Academy Award for her performance. "I have a friend here tonight. I don't know if ya'll remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out here with me. She about fainted. We both fainted," Lynn said with a laugh. "She went on to do the 'Coal Miner's Daughter,' and you know from there. Well, there's a little girl backstage that's going to do the play of `Coal Miner's Daughter' on Broadway," Lynn continued. "Zooey, where you at, honey?"

Mitt Romney Denounces Gay Marriage During Speech To Young Fascists

"The American culture promotes personal responsibility, the dignity of work, the value of education, the merit of service, devotion to a purpose greater than self, and, at the foundation, the pre-eminence of the family. The power of these values is evidenced by a Brookings Institution study that Senator Rick Santorum brought to my attention. For those who graduate from high school, get a full-time job, and marry before they have their first child, the probability that they will be poor is 2%. But, if those things are absent, 76% will be poor. Culture matters.

"As fundamental as these principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate. So it is today with the enduring institution of marriage. Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman. The protection of religious freedom has also become a matter of debate. It strikes me as odd that the free exercise of religious faith is sometimes treated as a problem, something America is stuck with instead of blessed with. Perhaps religious conscience upsets the designs of those who feel that the highest wisdom and authority comes from government." - Mitt Romney, speaking at today's commencement at Dead Dead Dead Jerry Falwell's Liberty University.

Romney Backs Away On Gay Adoption

Oh, what a difference 24 hours can make.
He said on Thursday: "And if two people of the same gender want to live together, want to have a loving relationship, or even to adopt a child -- in my state individuals of the same sex were able to adopt children. In my view, that's something that people have a right to do. But to call that marriage is something that in my view is a departure from the real meaning of that word."

But then on Friday, he was asked, in an interview with CBS' WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., how his opposition to same-sex marriage "squared" with his support for gay adoptions. Romney told anchor Paul Cameron, "Well actually I think all states but one allow gay adoption, so that's a position which has been decided by most of the state legislators, including the one in my state some time ago. So I simply acknowledge the fact that gay adoption is legal in all states but one."
Romney added that he doesn't intend to use the president's evolution on same-sex marriage as a campaign issue. He'll leave that to his henchmen, of course.

Quote Of The Day - Charles Pope

"We cannot pick and choose the books of the Bible, we cannot tear out pages, or cross out lines. Orthodoxy is to accept the whole of the Sacred Text, and to consider its claims with reference to the whole of Scripture and in keeping with its trajectory. For a Catholic, of course this is done in union with the Magisterium and Sacred Tradition. Many supporters of homosexual behavior adopt this heresy by saying, 'Jesus never said a word about or against Homosexuality.'

"True, but he also never said a word about a lot of things: drinking to excess, beating one’s wife, he never forbade ethnic humor, or said people should wear clothes, He never declared how big and how much money should be spent on the military etc, whether Government should provide welfare etc. Since Jesus did not say out of his own mouth we cannot beat our wives then it must be okay to beat them? Of course not. An argument from silence is very poor and unhelpful." - The Archdiocese of Washington's Msgr. Charles Pope, slamming the president for mentioning scripture in his endorsement of same-sex marriage.

Gallup Asks About Obama's Evolution

Reacting swiftly to the president's announcement, Gallup has already done a random poll of 1000 adults reached by phone.
More than half of Americans say they approve of President Obama's stance that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry legally, but 60% say that his shift in position will have no bearing on how they vote in the November election, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup poll. Overall, 51% approve of Obama's new position on same-sex marriage, compared with 45% who disapprove. Nearly 13% say his shift in position will make them more likely to vote for him, while 26% say it will make them less likely, suggesting that more supporters of likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney feel more strongly about this issue than do base supporters of Obama.
There's no breakdown of the responses by party affiliation at the linked story.

SENTENCED: London's "Gay-Free Zone" Bigot Caught With Al-Qaeda Materials

The British man jailed last year for plastering "Gay-Free Zone" stickers around London's East End has been sentenced to prison for possessing Al-Qaeda materials.
Mohammed Hasnath had copies of the group’s ‘Inspire’ magazine on a memory stick, PA reports, and was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment under the Terrorism Act. He was also given a one-month custodial term, to run concurrently, for painting burkhas over images of women in deodorant adverts. In 2011, Hasnath and a friend had been spotted painting over a scantily clad Kelly Brook on a Lynx hoarding. Hasnath, 19, of Leamouth, Tower Hamlets, pleaded guilty last year to a public order offence and was fined £100 plus £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge after he put up posters around the area declaring it a ‘gay free zone’.

Libertarian Candidate Slams Obama

"Instead of insisting on equality as a U.S. Constitutional guarantee, the President has thrown this question back to the states. When the smoke clears, Gay Americans will realize the President’s words have gained them nothing today, and that millions of Americans in most states will continue to be denied true marriage equality . I guess the President is still more worried about losing Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia than he is in doing the right thing. What is the President saying — that he would eat a piece of cake at a gay wedding if the state the happy couple lives in allows it ?. Where is the leadership? While I commend him for supporting the concept of gay marriage equality, I am profoundly disappointed in the President." - Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson.

NORTH CAROLINA: Lesbian Arrested In Marriage Protest In Winston-Salem

A North Carolina lesbian was arrested for trespassing yesterday after she refused to leave the Winston-Salem city office where she and her partner had applied for a marriage license.
The civil disobedience followed a day after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage, and two days after North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman. The protest came amid attempts by a gay rights group, Campaign for Southern Equality, to broaden public support to allow same-sex marriage and more protests are planned in coming days at other county offices in North Carolina that issue marriage licenses. Nine gay and lesbian couples each presented completed forms and identification to a clerk at the local Register of Deeds office in Winston-Salem, but were refused because state law recognizes only heterosexual couples.

Corrupt Former NY Sen. Pedro Espada Waves Rosary To Ward Off Evil Jurors

Former NY Sen. Pedro Espada, currently on trial for embezzling truckloads of money from a Bronx health clinic, appeared outside the courthouse yesterday to brandish a rosary in order to ward off the "evil spirits" that have overtaken the jurors in his case.
As jurors in the federal embezzlement trial of former State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. indicated Thursday that they might be close to a verdict after nine days of deliberations, Mr. Espada said he believed that an unusual force was at work: “evil spiritual powers.” Addressing a scrum of reporters outside Federal District Court in Brooklyn, Mr. Espada held up rosary beads and said, “We Catholics fight that off with this.” All of a sudden, evil spirits were lurking. Mr. Espada said a federal agent in the case was using her jewelry, attire and seating position to influence its outcome. If convicted on all counts, Mr. Espada and his son would face up to 10 years in prison for embezzlement and 5 years for conspiracy.
RELATED: In a failed bid to be named Majority Leader of an evenly split state Senate, in 2009 Espada attempted to stage a coup and temporarily joined the GOP, effectively preventing a vote on marriage equality at that time.

Brian Brownshirt: Help Us Maintain Our Unbroken Streak Of Thwarting Civil Rights

"Maryland and Washington only have a few weeks left to gather the signatures needed to qualify the referendum for the November ballot and both of them could really use the financial boost to ensure they have more than enough ballots signed (because the other side will undoubtedly challenge the validity of tens of thousands of our signatures) by the upcoming deadline.

"It's critical that each of these four campaigns receive the financial support they need to counter the same-sex marriage lobby's propaganda and lies. In the next year to year-and-a-half, the U.S. Supreme Court will likely hear cases pertaining to Proposition 8 and DOMA which will have incredible implications for the future of marriage in America. And the Supreme Court will be hesitant to overturn the unanimous verdict of 35 out of 35 states voting to protect marriage. But a loss in any one eliminates that unanimity and puts the laws defending marriage in jeopardy across the nation." - NOM president Brian Brown, in today's money beg.

ARIZONA: Scandal-Plagued Gay Cop Drops Congress Bid, Runs For Sheriff Again

Arizona's Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who was outed this February in a scandal regarding his Mexico-born boyfriend, claims that he can no longer run for Congress because the guy who was going to replace him as sheriff can no longer campaign.
When I announced my candidacy for Congress, I promised the citizens of Pinal County that I would ensure continuity of leadership in the Sheriff’s Office. Chief Deputy Steve Henry’s candidacy not only ensured continuity of leadership, it also safeguarded the improved service we’ve delivered to Pinal families with the same passion and commitment since taking office. The federal Office of Special Counsel has advised Chief Henry that because our office receives federal funds and Steve supervises those who are in control of federal funds, he is not able to run for Sheriff while serving as our Chief Deputy. Chief Henry was left three choices, resign his position as Chief Deputy and run for Sheriff, withdraw his candidacy for Sheriff or transfer to a non-leadership position within our office where he would not supervise anybody who handles any federal funding. Forget the politics, none of these options are good to maintain continued success of our Sheriff’s Office. I have decided to end our congressional campaign and seek re-election as Pinal County Sheriff. Yesterday, I informed my campaign staff and our finance team of my decision to run for re-election.
Yeeeah. THAT'S why he's dropping out. Okay, sure.

Change.org sends a press release:
Shannon Ritchie, a new mom and North Carolina native who volunteered in the effort to fight Amendment 1, the state’s recent ban on gay marriage, launched her petition on Change.org on Wednesday night after seeing President Obama publicly endorse gay marriage. “My husband and I were heartbroken when we found out that North Carolina’s hurtful and discriminatory Amendment 1 had passed on Tuesday evening,” said Ritchie, a registered Democrat. “But when I saw the president speak out in support of marriage equality, it gave me hope that we can still make a positive change right here in my home state of North Carolina. With the Democratic National Convention coming here in September, now is our chance to make history.” Each signature on the petition generates an email that is sent to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 2012 Democratic National Convention Chair. MISSOURI: School Board Member Advertises Against "Self-Destructive Homosexual Behavior"

Butler County Republican Party co-chair Hardy Billington has published the above lie-filled ad in Poplar Bluff's Daily American Republic in support of Missouri's pending "Don't Say Gay" bill. Billington, a Baptist deacon, is running for reelection to the Poplar Bluff school board. He crows about the changes he's made during his tenure:
Before I was president of the board, they weren’t doing the Pledge of Allegiance at Senior High for about 16 years. The board members and I passed in our by-laws that every student would have the opportunity to do the Pledge of Allegiance at least once a week as well as have 30 seconds to reflect. The people in this community have been extremely good to me, in both my business and in my personal life. I care a great deal for the people in our community, and in the last six years I had the opportunity to give back. I believe you should never give up, and that has been my motto in life. If I could only accomplish one thing, it is to instill in our children that philosophy. Our greatest treasure is our children, and they are our future.

All Time Record At Clooney Fundraiser

Holy cow.
President Obama set a new fundraising record at a glitzy event in George Clooney's backyard last night. The fundraiser attended by Hollywood's elite raked in a record-setting $15 million, according to DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg, a major Obama fundraiser. Most of the 150 or so guests paid $40,000 for a ticket to the event but the bulk of the money raised came from a raffle for smaller donors: The two seats up for grabs were won by a science teacher from New Jersey and a utility company worker from Florida, the Los Angeles Times reports. Obama circulated among stars including Barbra Streisand, Robert Downey Jr., Salma Hayek, Tobey Maguire, and Jack Black before giving a 19-minute speech. He thanked Clooney and noted that the famous "Hope" photo came from a photo of them both. "This is the first time that George Clooney has actually been Photoshopped out of a picture," he quipped.

White House Blog Recaps Reactions

The official White House blog has posted a lengthy recapping of the reactions to President Obama's announcement on marriage equality. Before quoting several major newspapers, blogger Josh Earnest writes:
It’s no secret the President has gone through some soul-searching on this issue. He’s talked to the First Lady about it, like so many couples do. He’s heard from folks—gay and lesbian friends, staff members in long-term, loving relationships, as well as brave young servicemen and women he got to know through the fight to end Don’t, Ask Don’t Tell.

He’s sat around his kitchen table with Sasha and Malia, who have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. As the President said during the interview, “it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them. And frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change of perspective -- not wanting to somehow explain to your child why somebody should be treated differently when it comes to eyes of the law.”

In the end, the President said, he believes it's important to "treat others the way you would want to be treated."We need to recognize that people are going to have differing views on marriage and those views, even if we disagree strongly, should be respected.

Castro's Niece Praises Obama

Cuba's leading LGBT rights advocate, Mariela Castro, is praising President Obama for his evolution on same-sex marriage.
The U.S. president delivered a message that was "humane, understanding, in which he even recognizes that he too has been changing his opinion in favor of marriage, the free union of same-sex couples," said Mariela Castro, who is Cuba's most prominent gay rights activist as head of the National Center for Sex Education, or Cenesex. "Hopefully his words will be taken seriously in the political and legislative decisions made in different states and in the whole world," Castro said, adding that such statements by Obama and other politicians must be accompanied by concrete actions if they are to be made into reality.
Cuba's legislature is currently considering recognition of same-sex unions.

GLAAD Slams CNN Over Tony Perkins

"To cable news viewers, he's just the conservative guy who comes on sometimes to talk about gay stuff from a Republican point of view. But Perkins' own statements will show you that those positions don't come from politics. They are the result of pure animus towards gay people, and a belief that they're doing the work of 'the enemy.' You can expose how extreme Perkins' positions are by challenging them, like [Soledad] O'Brien and [Piers] Morgan did. But you're still not telling the whole story, unless you tell your audience what's at the heart of those positions. We are once again asking journalists to hold anti-gay activists like Perkins accountable for their own statements against LGBT people, and to deliver that critical information to their audiences." - GLAAD president Herndon Graddick, in a scathing HuffPo piece slamming CNN for hosting Tony Perkins three times in the 24 hours after Obama's announcement.

Graddick suggests this introduction for all of Perkins' appearances: "Joining me is Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council, which has been labeled a 'hate group' by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its anti-gay activism."

Ripple Effect

"I have believed that the phrase ‘civil union’ was an appropriate definition of a relationship that is both different and the same between two people of the same sex. And I have believed strongly that such couples must be treated equally under the law. Because I believe that equal treatment is a central tenet of our nation, I believe that extending the definition of marriage to committed relationships between two people, irrespective of their sex, is the right thing to do and will not, in any way, undermine the institution of marriage so important to our society nor impose a threat to any individual marriage. It will, however, extend the respect due to every one of our fellow citizens that we would want for ourselves and our children." - House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), coming out for marriage equality. Hoyer's statement calls the denial of marriage to gay people a "variation of the miscegenation issue."

NBC Cancels Thursdays

Well, at least we'll get the final season.
The struggling Peacock network is taking a new direction with its primetime lineup, and that means cleaning house. Until this week, the once-dominant network had been suspiciously mum on its plans for next season. That all changed with a giant info dump from NBC execs which included the fates of veteran sitcoms “30 Rock,” “Community” and “Parks and Recreation.” All three critical darlings will be given abbreviated “send off” seasons followed by immediate termination. Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, NBC’s long-running Thursday comedy lineup has never garnered stellar ratings. The limited order of 13 episodes for each show must have seen like a good compromise solution for the network that has seen itself slide from first to fourth place over the last decade.

Washington Post: During Prep School Mitt Romney Assaulted A Classmate For His Presumed Homosexuality

According to the Washington Post, while in an expensive prep school Mitt Romney bullied a classmate for his perceived homosexuality and tackled the kid to hack off his dyed blond hair.
John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it. “He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled. A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors. The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named.
The victim died in 2004. A spokesman claims that Romney has "no memory" of the incident. The spokesman further declared that he would respond to no more inquiries about Romney's prep school years.

UPDATE: Romney apologizes.

U.S. House "Reaffirms" DOMA

In a move obviously meant as a middle-finger to the president's historic announcement, last night the GOP-dominated U.S. House "reaffirmed" the Defense Of Marriage Act. The new amendment, which was attached to a funding bill, commands that the Obama administration may take no action in violation of DOMA, something the White House has not done.

Via Chris Johnson at Washington Blade:
In a 245-171 vote, House lawmakers approved the amendment, introduced by freshman Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas), as part of Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations legislation. The amendment reads, “None of the funds made available under this Act, may be used in contravention of the Defense of Marriage Act.” Ian Thompson, legislative representative for the American Civil Liberties Union, said the amendment in effect does nothing because although the Justice Department is no longer defending DOMA in court, the Obama administration is still enforcing it. “The Huelskamp Amendment is a solution in search of a problem,” Thompson said. “While there are multiple legal challenges to DOMA working their way through the federal courts, it is still binding. This amendment serves absolutely no purpose other than to score political points at the expense of gay and lesbian couples.”
Seven Republicans opposed the bill including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL) and Rep. Mary Bono Mack (CA). Sixteen Democrats approved the bill.

Pastor Sean Harris: JMG Is Making Money By Taking My Words Out Of Context

Pastor Sean Harris says I deliberately mischaracterized his words in order to "sensationalize" his message and generate hits to this blog.
When you look at my blog you are not bombarded with advertisements. There aren’t any. I don’t make any money from my blog. That is not the purpose of the blog. But that obviously is the purpose of a blog that has advertisements on the left and right sides and on the top of the blog. “Joe. My God.” is one of these bloggers that busted this story wide open by taking me out of context and then telling the world about this pastor who said “beat the gay out of children” (which I never said). What he needs to make money on his blog is hits or views.

And the way you get views is to have a sensational story. The more sensational the story is the more views one receives. The more views a blogger has on his website the more money he can potentially make. But there is no cry from anyone about the profiteering from the destruction of a man’s reputation and character. There is no outcry from the masses or media about the profiteering from the slander and malice intend by those in the LGBT community. I can’t tell you the number of stories I have seen where words that I never said appeared in quotation marks.
Actually it was my colleague Jeremy Hooper who "busted this story wide open" by posting the video of Harris' rant. I reposted Jeremy's clip and included the verbatim transcript. It was the entire world who watched that video and got his "beat the gay out of children" message. Sadly, it needed no "sensationalizing."

Manhattan Declaration Issues Advice: How To Troll Obama's Marriage Equality News

Last month Manhattan Declaration co-author Chuck Colson went to that great Watergate prison cell in the sky, but his legacy of avowed civil disobedience against same-sex marriage lives on. Via press release, here's their advice on how to troll web articles on the story:
At a time when most Americans’ primary concern is their ability to work to provide for their family, as crippling debt, record deficits, and fragile global markets loom over the economy, the President seems intent on having a national conversation about life, love, and religious liberty. So be it. Below is a list of ten articles and videos on the subject of marriage. Take an hour to skim them. Don’t try to memorize the data or recite the arguments verbatim; rather, reflect on them. Allow your mind to absorb the broad principles. As the national conversation on this topic reaches a fever pitch in the next few days, you will be primed as a witness to the truth. One final thought: this is not a war to be won in the blogosphere or on Facebook. We are teachers, co-workers, family members, and friends in relationship with those who have yet to see. Be gracious, be patient, and be kind.
The alert ends with this: Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven. (Matthew 5:11)

One Of The Four GOP Senators Who Approved NY Marriage Is Retiring

NOM will doubtlessly claim to have had something to do with it, but NY Sen. James Alesi announced yesterday that he will not seek reelection. Alesi is one of the four GOP state senators targeted by NOM after they helped swing the 2011 same-sex marriage vote into the "yes" column.
Alesi’s re-election prospects were viewed as dim because of a lawsuit he filed in 2011 against a couple in his district after he allegedly trespassed on the couple’s property. Asked if the lawsuit was a key factor in his decision, Alesi said, “You could point to that. There’s absolutely no way of making that go away. I’ve apologized, and every time it comes up, I reiterate my apology.” Alesi said he would serve the remainder of his term, which runs until year’s end. Monroe County Republican Party leaders have said they will support someone else, and are in talks with Assemblyman Sean Hanna, R-Mendon, and a formal announcement is expected on Thursday morning. Democrats on Thursday will announce that Monroe County Legislature Minority Leader Ted O’Brien will run in the 55th District, county Democratic Chairman Joseph Morelle said late Wednesday.
RELATED: I met Alesi last fall at a press event with Gov. Cuomo. I came away impressed.
