Afternoon View - Turtle Hatchling Crossing

When the sea turtles hatchings burst out their eggs, they are often distracted by car and street lights and lured onto A1A. Coordinating the volunteer effort to guide the babies safely to the sea is Hugh Taylor Birch park ranger (and Ramrod bartender) Mark Foley. (The other and much hotter Mark Foley.)

NOM's Latest Bit Of Hypocrisy

"Dear Marriage Supporter, I'll keep this short, but the need in North Carolina is urgent. We've just learned that gay marriage supporters in North Carolina have been stockpiling mountains of cash. It's looking almost certain that in the final days before the election, they will launch an all-out air war, blanketing North Carolina TV and radio with ads full of lies and misinformation about the Marriage Protection Amendment—using scare tactics to maximum effect before we have a chance to respond. It's a bold strategy—but we can't let it succeed. And the only way we can fight back is if we have the resources to get our message out to voters. In a fair fight, the truth will prevail—but without the resources to mount an aggressive ad campaign of our own, it won't be a fair fight." - From an EMERGENCY donation plea posted on NOM's blog. (Bolding is motherfucking mine.)

Gays Will Destroy Civilization

I point you to this blind item from last month.
There is an area in Griffith Park where you can take the kiddies for a train ride. A certain actor used to enjoy taking men for another kind of ride in the same area. He would cruise the park, pick up a guy, and then hook up with them in his car. The really ironic thing here is that the actor is so religious that when he was a teen heartthrob (a couple of decades ago) he used to insist that any dialogue that was even the slightest bit sexual or profane be removed from his lines because they violated his sense of decency. He’s all grown up now – and still cruises for guys – but we’re sure his wife really appreciates what a moral man she married.

Billboard Of The Day

American Atheists say:
The “HR 535 – Year of the Bible Resolution” declared by the PA House of Representatives asked us to “study and apply the teachings of the holy scriptures”. After considering the bill, we felt it necessary to highlight one of those teachings and share it with the public in the form of this billboard. It will be posted starting around March 5th for 28 days, and stay up throughout the month of March.

Today In Gay Batshittery

Last December "gay matchmaker" Paul Angelo announced that men who enjoy receptive anal sex suffer from "disrespect for their general health, failure at work, failure in love and relationships." Today Angelo tells us that newly out gay men have a 70% chance of "becoming HIV poz." But don't worry, he has a solution.
"First, we know that if a man is a 'feeler' from MBTI personality testing, he is more likely to get carried away and engage in unprotected sex. A man who is a 'thinker,' someone who decides mostly on logic, will stop and choose to have safe sex even though he is having a great time." says Angelo. "Basic personality testing and behavioral testing is a must to determine one's ability to control behavior at times of pleasure. Hoping for the right decision at a time of an emotional 'high' is a prescription for becoming Hiv poz," says Angelo. Because of the controversial and graphic nature of this coaching program, Angelo is unable to provide further details. For more information, readers are asked to visit Angelo's website.
Angelo's website doesn't reveal how much he'll charge you to reduce that 70% HIV risk that he totally pulled out of his non-anally receptive ass.

MAINE: Catholic Diocese Says It Won't Campaign Against Gay Marriage Bill

In a stunning turnaround, Maine's Catholic diocese says it will not campaign publicly against this November's vote on the same-sex marriage.
Bishop Richard Malone on Friday unveiled a "pastoral letter" he wrote explaining the church's position on marriage. The document will be discussed at Catholic churches and schools, through the diocese's magazine and on radio stations devoted to Catholic issues. Malone said the letter will be the heart of the church's response to gay-marriage supporters. The church in 2009 took up special collections and asked for contributions from other dioceses to fund a campaign against an effort to legalize gay marriage. The Legislature that year legalized same-sex marriage, but voters later overturned the law.
For the first time for any state, Maine's gay marriage item was placed on the ballot by gay activists themselves. (Tipped by JMG reader Matt)

21 Senate Dems Want Marriage Plank

At this writing 21 Senate Democrats have signed on to a call for a marriage equality plank in this year's Democratic Convention. Chris Johnson reports:
The Washington Blade received statements from the offices of 21 Democratic senators — including Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) — expressing support for including a marriage equality plank in the Democratic Party platform. The Blade solicited statements from all 53 Democratic senators and will update this article as more senators respond. The senators follow the lead of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who on Tuesday became the first U.S. senator this year to get behind the idea of including same-sex marriage in the Democratic Party platform. Shaheen, who’s also a co-chair of President Obama’s national campaign committee, said she backs a plank in support of marriage equality proposed by the LGBT organization Freedom to Marry.
Here's the language of Freedom To Marry's proposed plank.
The Democratic Party supports the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, with equal respect, responsibility, and protection under the law, including the freedom to marry. Government has no business putting barriers in the path of people seeking to care for their family members, particularly in challenging economic times. We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and oppose discriminatory constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny the freedom to marry to loving and committed same-sex couples.”

TRAILER: Breaking Free

Clip description:
"I've a right to love and live with dignity", cry out the Indian gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community who have been made invisible and pushed underground by a draconian law Sec 377 that criminalized homosexuality till recently. The film BREAKING FREE strings together anguished voices of those who were tortured, blackmailed and indicted by this law; alongwith voices of advocates, activists and opinion builders who have fought a decade-long battle to have this law read down in 2009.

Obama Killed Breitbart, Part II

World Net Daily has a new cause.
Noting that the cause of Andrew Breitbart’s unexpected death yesterday was being examined by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, talk-radio host Michael Savage raised the question of whether the conservative media powerhouse – who recently announced he had videos that could politically damage President Obama – was murdered. On his top-rated show today, Savage played an audio clip of Breitbart telling an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington last month that he had obtained videos that shed light on Obama’s ties to radicals in the early 1980s who helped propel him to the presidency. “Maybe my overly active imagination kicked into overdrive,” Savage told his listeners of his decision to raise the question. “But you heard what Breitbart said – he has videos … we’re going to vet the president.”

Evil Seniors Love Godless Gays

"Special rights for immoral behavior. Advocacy for same-sex marriage. Support for homosexual adoption. These are some of the things that the AARP does with the money from dues that they receive from the millions over the age of 50 that they’re supposed to represent. While many think of it as an organization that’s all about insurance, travel discounts, and group outings with friends, this is the very sad truth about the AARP. And, in spite of the fact that ObamaCare will probably lead to much more euthanasia and health care rationing for the elderly, AARP has been one of the leading supporters. If they don’t represent you, you can quit." - Theocracy activist Janet Porter, speaking on her national radio program.

AFER Founder Chad Griffin Will Succeed Joe Solmonese At Human Rights Campaign

American Foundation for Equal Rights co-founder Chad Griffin has been hired to succeed Joe Solmonese as president of the Human Rights Campaign. Via press release:
Chad H. Griffin was appointed today as the next president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, by the organization’s Board of Directors. Griffin, a national communications and policy strategist, is widely credited for being the mastermind behind the federal lawsuit to overturn California's Proposition 8, which has now been ruled unconstitutional by two federal courts. Griffin’s appointment follows an extensive six month search by the board that included the consideration of over one hundred diverse and extremely well-qualified candidates from the worlds of business, academia and activism. Griffin will assume his new responsibilities on June 11, 2012. Current HRC president Joe Solmonese will continue to lead the organization until that time.
It was Griffin who hired the unlikely legal team of Ted Olson and David Boies to spearhead AFER's successful court battle to have Proposition 8 declared unconstitutional.

Ken Mehlman Apologizes For First Time

"At a personal level, I wish I had spoken out against the effort. As I’ve been involved in the fight for marriage equality, one of the things I’ve learned is how many people were harmed by the campaigns in which I was involved. I apologize to them and tell them I am sorry. While there have been recent victories, this could still be a long struggle in which there will be setbacks, and I’ll do my part to be helpful." - Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, finally publicly apologizing for spearheading a dozen state-level anti-gay ballot measures in order increase voter turnout for the 2004 reelection of George W. Bush.

RELATED: In the last two years Mehlman has worked to help convince GOP lawmakers to support same-sex marriage in several states. However later this month he will also co-chair a high-ticket fundraiser for the reelection for House Speaker John Boehner, who recently tripled the federal budget to defend against the overturn of DOMA.

Quote Of The Day - Bill Donohue

"In the month of February alone, six public school employees have been arrested for sexually abusing a minor. And this is just in New York City! Common decency, as well as common sense, dictates that new laws designed to curb this problem should begin by targeting the public schools. Instead, [New York State Assemblywoman Margaret] Markey wants to give them a pass. There is a bill that does not discriminate between private and public institutions. Assemblywoman Markey thinks that equal coverage is wrong; she believes in selective justice, which is the highest expression of injustice." - Catholic League blowhard Bill Donohue, opposing a bill to lift the statute of limitations on suing churches for child molestation. The bill is also opposed by Cardinal Dolan, of course.

Doctors Can't Be Trusted, They Love Gays

"I know we all want to believe what is told to us by folks in the white lab coats, and much of the time we can. But when it comes to issues dealing with lifespan and sexuality, mainstream medicine is falling under the spell of leftwing politics. Doctors can be politically correct to the detriment of patient care. [snip] This is why there are splinter professional groups being formed, well-respected physicians who cannot support these harmful practices in good conscience. For instance the group NARTH, National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, was formed some years back to counteract the increasingly politically motivated decisions of groups like the American Psychiatric Association. The APA removed homosexuality from its list of disorders in 1973 based on pressure from disruptive and vicious homosexuals and not because of some new scientific breakthrough." - Linda Harvey, head of the Mission America hate group. HomoQuotable - Greg Quinlan

"I do not believe this Field Poll of 59% of California regular voters support same-sex marriage. That just flies in the face of the two real polls, two elections -- one to change the laws in California, the other one to change the state Constitution. The California voters want marriage to be one man, one woman -- period. In spite of the massive amounts of money, of being out-stanced and out-maneuvered, and with foot soldiers on the ground, the homosexual agenda still cannot get a majority of the voters in any state, anywhere in this nation to approve homosexual marriage -- not one time." - "Ex-gay" leader Greg Quinlan, claiming that yesterday's poll was faked.

Protest Sign Of The Day

The "personhood" people are super pissed at Oklahoma state Sen. Judy Eason McIntyre. Via press release:
"The Personhood issue often provokes strong language from all sides," commented Dan Skerbitz, president of Personhood Oklahoma. "But this display of vulgarity from a sitting senator is truly shocking. It is more evidence of the hardness of heart behind a movement that would deny the right of a helpless pre-born baby to be recognized and protected by the law as a human person." "This makes it obvious that their moral compass is broken," continued Skerbirtz. "It is not surprising that a world view that finds such comments acceptable is not above lying about the Personhood Amendment or its possible effects on the lives of Oklahomans. Those who oppose the concept of personhood in Oklahoma are showing their true colors."
McIntyre had borrowed the sign from a protester outside her office.

TORONTO: Male Cop Sued For Trying To "Convert" Lesbian Subordinate

Toronto Police Inspector Steve Izzett is being sued for sexual harassment by a lesbian subordinate who claims that Izzett tried to "convert her" with a long personal note attached to religious propaganda about the origins of homosexuality.
Staff Insp. Steve Izzett, formerly head of the Intelligence Unit, and currently on suspension, was grilled Wednesday during his disciplinary hearing by prosecutor Brian Gover over an article entitled “The Great Nature-Nurture Debate,’’ a religious-themed piece exploring the “causes’’ of homosexuality. Izzett, who told the hearing he researched the article in April 2007 on a day he was supposed to be prepping for his promotion interview, looked up the piece after being told by the woman — who can’t be named due to a publication ban — that she was in a same-sex relationship. In a lengthy note at the end of the article, which Izzett also gave to the woman, he wrote that he felt “energized, fulfilled, inspired” by her, and that she had “awakened the giant within.”
Izzett reportedly told his employee to end her "same-sex experiment" so they could be together. (Tipped by JMG reader Karen)

NYC To End Taxi Light Confusion

The "Off Duty" light on NYC cabs means the vehicle is out of service. Except for when you are going the same direction as the cabbie's route home. Or except for when the cabbie wants to make sure you aren't going to, horrors, Brooklyn. All that is about to end.
Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman David Yassky said Tuesday medallion owners will be directed this fall to start removing the signs and adopting a simpler way of indicating whether a cab is available. Under the current scheme, the cab-top signs have four different potential meanings depending on whether either or both the off-duty lights and the medallion number light are illuminated. “It’s far too confusing for the average rider,” Yassky told the Daily News. Under the new system, the cab-top signs will have only two potential meanings: available if the medallion number is lit, or unavailable if it’s dark.
Many times I've had cabs stop for me with their "off duty" light on, only to peel out when they don't like my destination. But sometimes they don't, so New Yorkers are trained to flail uselessly at any cab light configuration. Hurray for the TLC.

Indiana's Gay License Plate Survives

Early this year Indiana approved a specialty license plate to benefit an LGBT youth group. That, of course, sent the American Family Association into a screaming fit and a bill to ban all such plates was shortly submitted. But for this year at least, the gay youth plate has survived its recall attempt.
Indiana House lawmakers have abandoned a plan to clamp down on specialty license plates. Republican Ed Soliday, of Valparaiso, pulled the measure during an evening session tonight just hours before a key deadline in the 2012 legislative session. The plan would have curbed an expansion of specialty plates that the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has awarded to groups including the National Wild Turkey Foundation and the Indiana Youth Group, which supports gay youth.
Soliday says he'll try again next year. (Tipped by JMG reader Betty)

Have You Given Up Hope For A Cure?

That's what longtime HIV/AIDS activist Peter Staley asks his readers on Poz.com
I know I haven't, and I'm betting most POZ/AIDSmeds readers haven't either. Then why aren't we fighting harder for research towards a cure? And why aren't we pushing back harder against congress for recently blocking support for needle exchange programs, or taking Obama to task for his proposed budget cut to PEPFAR? Why aren't we all standing up strongly for the single most important piece of legislation for the care of people with HIV/AIDS? It's called Obamacare, and we should all start defending it against misleading FOX News/Tea Party attacks. The amazing Vincent Gagliostro, an ad-hoc member of Gran Fury, the art collective that created many of ACT UP's most memorable graphics, designed this poster yesterday to inspire all of us as the 25th anniversary of ACT UP approaches.
Staley tips us of an upcoming action. "Are you ready to fight back?"

Details Emerge On Breitbart's Death

NBC Los Angeles:
Breitbart was walking near his home in Brentwood, Calif just after midnight Thursday when he collapsed according to his father-in-law Orson Bean. Someone saw Breitbart fall and called 911. Emergency crews tried to revive him and rushed him to the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, Bean said.
It's interesting that Christian right wingnut and actor Orson Bean was Breitbart's father-in-law. Bean was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for attending Communist Party meetings. He was also a vocal proponent for Proposition 8.

Email Of The Day - Eugene Delgaudio

"Joe, We took CPAC back for the Family! Last year, I was forced to stand against the establishment by handing out flyers at the door warning of the homosexual influence. Moral leaders stood by my side and boycotted it en masse -- only 2% of the pro-Family organizations in the country attended. The enemy countered with a slew of Family-bashing speakers who trashed and condemned the Family Movement for protesting. But we stood firm. We fought them and change happened. CPAC rejected the authority of the Radical Homosexual Lobby.

"This year I was allowed to meet inside the event with pro-Family leaders in order to coordinate our efforts. Pro-Family participants accounted for 19% of the total attendance. And pro-Family speakers like Sarah Palin were given the chance to speak up for traditional values and real marriage. Pro-Family groups were manning over 100 booths and directly greeted more than 10,000 people. My friend, this is a major victory for Public Advocate." - Eugene Delgaudio, taking personal credit for the banning of GOProud at CPAC 2012.

SAN FRANCISCO: History Of HIV/AIDS Activism To Launch At GLBT Museum

An exhibit chronicling the history of HIV/AIDS activism in San Francisco will open on March 5th at the GLBT Museum. Via press release:
"Life and Death in Black and White: AIDS Direct Action in San Francisco, 1985-1990," focuses on the work of five queer photographers who documented the emergence of militant AIDS activism in San Francisco through the medium of black-and-white film. With sharp focus and deep compassion, they turned their lenses on their own community, capturing sorrow and outrage, courage and wit, a fierce will to live and a deep commitment to honor the dying and remember the dead. The exhibition features the work of Jane Philomen Cleland, Patrick Clifton, Marc Geller, Rick Gerharter and Daniel Nicoletta. Some of their images of AIDS activism have become iconic; others have never before been publicly displayed. All of them portray civil disobedience as a response to discrimination, indifference and official neglect in the face of a fatal epidemic. All bear forceful witness to a time when San Francisco experienced both some of its darkest hours and one of its most inspiring movements for social justice.
The exhibit runs through July 1st. [Photo by Patrick Clifton]

The poll showed backing for same-sex marriage in the Garden State climbed to a new high, 57 percent in favor compared to 37 percent opposed. The day after the state Senate passed a bill supporting gay marriage, a Rutgers-Eagleton poll released on Feb. 14 showed 54 percent of New Jerseyans favor gay marriage compared to 35 percent against.
