Barbara Billingsley Dies At Age 94

Barbara Billingsley, perhaps the most famous mother in the history of television, passed away at her California home today at the age of 94.
From 1957 to 1963 and in decades of reruns, the glamorous June, who wore pearls and high heels at home, could be counted on to help her husband, Ward (Hugh Beaumont), get their son Theodore, better known as Beaver (Jerry Mathers), and his older brother, Wally (Tony Dow), extricated from innumerable minor jams, from an alligator in the basement to a horse in the garage. While baking a steady supply of cookies, she would use motherly intuition to sound the alarm about incipient trouble (“Ward, I’m worried about the Beaver”) in their immaculate, airy house in the fictional town of Mayfield. (The house appeared to have no master bedroom, just a big door from which Ward and June occasionally emerged, tying their bathrobes.)

Along with the mothers played by Harriet Nelson (“The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”), Donna Reed (“The Donna Reed Show”) and others, Ms. Billingsley’s role became a cultural standard, one that may have been too good to be true but engendered fan mail and nostalgia for decades afterward, from the same generation whose counterculture derided the see-no-evil suburbia June’s character represented. The real Barbara Billingsley, who had nothing but respect for June Cleaver, was a former model and career actress who was married three times and spent part of her career as a working single mother (of two boys, at that).
I used to watch Leave It To Beaver and wonder what the hell had gone wrong with my family, not realizing that nobody's family was like that.

SAN DIEGO: Court Upholds Settlement For Firemen "Forced" Into Gay Pride Parade

An appeals court has upheld a settlement ordered to be paid to four San Diego firemen who sued the city because they'd been told they must ride in the 2007 gay pride parade. The delicate snowflakes claimed sexual harassment because some parade attendees allegedly made obscene comments as they passed and because they witnessed men in Speedos making out. The anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund represented the firemen.
The 2009 jury found the firefighters were sexually harassed by some parade participants and spectators and awarded them a total of $34,300 plus more than a half-million dollars in legal fees. The firefighters, John Ghiotto, Chad Allison, Jason Hewitt and Alexander Kane, had always maintained money was not the issue and that they had sued because they felt it was wrong to have been forced by their superiors to take part in the parade. By 2008 the fire department had changed its policy saying parades should be staffed only by volunteers. “I’m happy with the ruling,” Ghiotto said Friday. “The amount of money the city has spent on this is amazing — I’ll bet it’s in the millions by now. This whole thing could have been solved in a day. They knew two or three days before that we didn’t want to be in that parade.” Ghiotto said all four firefighters are still with the department.
According to the court: "The record contains substantial evidence to support a finding that the sexual harassment experienced by the Firefighters during the Pride Parade was severe and pervasive, thus altering the conditions of employment and creating a hostile or abusive work environment." The city says it may further appeal the case to a higher court.

Feds Denounce Pet Insurance Story

In reference to the post several below this one, the Office Of Personnel Management has issued this statement:
"Stories claiming that the federal government offers pet insurance to federal employees, and juxtaposing that benefit with the fact that the federal government cannot under current law provide health insurance benefits to federal employees' domestic partners are grossly inaccurate. While Aetna is a participating carrier in the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), the pet insurance product offered by Aetna is not a federal benefit, nor has it been listed as a benefit in any OPM prepared or reviewed materials. Aetna, on its own initiative, offers a variety of discount products to its members, including gym memberships, weight loss programs, eyewear, vitamins, etc. Pet insurance is one of these products.

"Aetna has apologized for using the reference to FEHBP in its communication on this discount program. OPM regrets that Aetna's error is being cited by some as evidence that same-sex domestic partner health insurance benefits for federal employees are not a priority by OPM and the Administration. Nothing could be further from the truth.

"The Obama Administration believes in granting equal rights and benefits to gay and lesbian federal employees as demonstrated by the President's strong support of the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, which will provide full benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers. The Director of OPM has testified in both the Senate and the House in favor of its passage."

Press Release Of The Day

Just in via press release, a delicious screw-up by Fox News Radio...
VERMONT BAND THE SMITTENS SHOCKED BY THE JOHN GIBSON SHOW’S NEW THEME

Fox News inadvertently features gay band on homophobe’s show

Arch-conservative Fox News Radio Host John Gibson - an avowed opponent of gay marriage, and one of GLAAD’s 2008 ‘Worst Anti-Gay Voices’ - has used the track ‘Something Sassy’ by Vermont indie band The Smittens as his new bump to emphasize just how ‘sassy’ racist and homophobic sentiments are. The band, of which two members are gay, were surprised and appalled by the news. Dana Kaplan, who plays and sings with the band, said: “The Smittens were pretty shocked to hear our song ‘Something Sassy’ being used as bumper music for John Gibson’s radio show. We find it pretty ironic that someone in his team has not done their research properly – two members of the band are gay and one legally married her spouse in Vermont! As you can imagine we’re not big fans of John Gibson and don’t want our music associated with his offensive views. I guess it just goes to show you John - ‘ We are Everywhere!’ Thanks for your inadvertent support”
Here's the 2009 Vermont wedding of Smittens vocalist Dana Kaplan.

Feds: You Can Buy Health Insurance For Your Poodle, But Not For Your Partner

All my listservs are blowing up this afternoon with the news that while LGBT federal employees may not purchase health insurance for their partners (thanks to DOMA), they can buy health insurance for their pets. Members of the Federal Employees Health Benefits plan received the below ad today.HRC's Joe Solmonese goes off via press release:
"Current law puts federal workers' parrots ahead of their partners," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "It is time for Congress to act to put people first and extend health care benefits equally to all of their employees." [snip] In fact, 57% of Fortune 500 companies offer domestic partner benefits to their employees. HRC is not aware of any statistics regarding pet insurance offerings by the Fortune 500. The President has instructed federal agencies to "conduct a thorough review of the benefits they provide and to identify any that could be extended to LGBT employees and their partners and families" and some limited benefits have been extended. But because of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Congress must pass the Domestic Partner Benefits and Obligations Act to extend critical health care benefits. The President has called on Congress to pass DPBO (S.1102 and H.R.2517) which has been passed in House and Senate committees but awaits floor action.

Jackass 3D Screens At The LA Eagle

The producers of Jackass 3D gave a sneak preview to some patrons of the Los Angeles Eagle last week. Cast member Steve-O told Vanity Fair that all the Jackass movies are not-so-subtle attacks on homophobia.
We always thought it was funny to force a heterosexual MTV generation to deal with all of our thongs and homoerotic humor. In many ways, all our gay humor has been a humanitarian attack against homophobia. We’ve been trying to rid the world of homophobia for years, and I think gay people really dig it too.

Laura Bush: It Wasn't My Responsibility To Defend Gays From The GOP

Speaking to the Texas Tribune, former First Lady Laura Bush said that even though she fully supports LGBT rights, she never spoke up during her husband's anti-gay campaigns. Because he was elected, not her.
TT: Let’s talk a little bit about that responsibility. You found yourself back in the headlines not so long ago for taking positions on gay marriage and abortion that appeared to be at odds with your husband and with the GOP. What do you say to the critics who argue you had a responsibility to come forward sooner, or who suggest you maybe hid those opinions from view?

Bush: Well, I didn’t hide them from view. They were very well known from the first day George was elected, when Katie Couric asked me the question. I’m not elected. I was not elected. George is. He’s the one who’s elected. I was not the elected official. It was not my responsibility, I didn’t think, to speak out in ways to get in some sort of debate with him. I just didn’t see that as part of my role.
The Dallas Voice reacts:
Apparently Bush still doesn’t see advocacy on behalf of the LGBT community as part of her role, because she ignored an invitation to attend Dallas’ gay Pride celebration this year. Meanwhile, despite her focus on education, Bush hasn’t said anything about the national teen bullying suicide crisis. Asked at the end of the TT interview about the governor’s race, Bush says, “Absolutely we’re supporting Gov. Perry.”

DOJ Declines To Appeal Ruling Allowing Christianists To Proselytize In Parks

The Department of Justice has elected to let stand a court ruling which allows Christianists and other religious groups to demonstrate, preach, and proselytize in federal parks. The original case was brought by the anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund over a preacher who was made to stop handing out pamphlets at Mount Rushmore.
"It was a bureaucratic nightmare," said Nate Kellum, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, a nonprofit Christian legal defense group. "He was completely stymied from sharing his Christian views with anybody else." The case "establishes that national parks are no different than any other public park," Kellum said. "There's no distinction now between Mount Rushmore and the city park down the street." Groups of 25 or fewer people may now demonstrate or distribute or sell printed material in designated areas of national parks and historic sites without a permit, according to interim regulations to be published soon in the Federal Register.
Even though this decision by the DOJ is unrelated to DADT, Servicemembers United feels it is emblematic of the Obama administration's hypocrisy. Via press release:
"In the very same week, the administration says that it absolutely must appeal a federal court's decision on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' while it orders the Justice Department not to appeal a federal court's ruling in favor of the conservative Alliance Defense Fund. This contradiction is simply incomprehensible and insulting," said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United and the sole named veteran plaintiff in the case along with the Log Cabin Republicans. "Servicemembers United renews its call for the administration to withdraw its appeal of both the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' ruling and the injunction pursuant to that ruling."

Bronx Bashers: We Didn't Do It

Yesterday ten members of the Latin King Goonies gang pleaded not guilty to the brutal gay-bashings of three men in the Bronx.
The 10 men appeared one by one before a judge in the Bronx as prosecutors said they were ready to present evidence to indict them on various charges including assault, sexual abuse and harassment, all as hate crimes. Authorities say the Oct. 3 attacks at a Bronx home were touched off because gang members thought one of their recruits was gay. A 17-year-old was beaten and sodomized with a plunger handle, police say. Another 17-year-old also thought to be gay was attacked, and a 30-year-old and his brother were beaten as well. Their laywers said they are innocent. "Please stop running to judgment," said Sanders Dennis, attorney for alleged ringleader Idelfonzo Mendez. "Stop making him a monster. Let the system play it out." Defendant Ruddy Vargas-Perez [photo below] is "absolutely distraught," said his lawyer, Benjamin Heinrich. "Ruddy is as appalled as everyone else." Vargas-Perez, who is out on bail, left the courtroom surrounded by family and friends. His lawyer prevented him from talking to reporters. "Ruddy is a working man" with a job in construction, Heinrich said. "He pays his taxes."

Townhall's Mike Adams: Eight Christian Suicides Over LGBT Bullying

The virulently anti-gay Townhall published a column yesterday by University of North Carolina-Wilmington professor Mike Adams in which he claims to tick off eight examples of Christians who have killed themselves due to bullying by LGBT activists. All of the cited examples involve well-known cases in which Christianists have faced repercussions for anti-gay speech. An example:
Julia was a student at a university in Michigan. She was asked to help a homosexual client by using “gay affirmation” therapy. But she refused to do so because of her beliefs about homosexuality. (Note: It is OK to refuse to provide gay correction therapy even if that is what the client desires. But one must not refuse to provide gay affirmation therapy). Julia was expelled from Eastern Michigan because of her views. So she ended it all.
Obviously none of these situations actually resulted in a suicide. Hall explains his ruse in his final paragraph.
These eight cases are all true except for one thing: The Christians who were bullied by gays and gay activists are all still alive. Not a single one has committed suicide. That is because they have centered their lives around Jesus Christ, rather than their sexual identity. And no amount of bullying can change my mind about that.
Isn't he clever? Isn't he hilarious?

Broadway Friday

- Openly gay Broadway star Marty Thomas (Wicked, Xanadu) is suing Twitter to force them to disclose the identity of a user who claimed that Thomas was given crabs by a cast member of Avenue Q. Thomas said in court papers: "I do not suffer from, nor have I ever suffered from a sexually transmitted disease." Twitter has never been forced to identify an anonymous user.

- In The Heights star Janet Dacal opens this April in a new musical "inspired by" Alice In Wonderland. Also cast is openly gay singer/dancer Tituss Burgess (Jersey Boys). Music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll And Hyde).

- Openly gay actor T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy) and Patrick Stewart opened last night in the revival of David Mamet's A Life In The Theatre, which first ran on Broadway in 1977. One early review isn't so great.

- The Professional Bull Riders Association will hold a competition in the middle of Times Square today at 1pm. The specially-built arena is supposed be "one city block" in size. Free and open to the public.

- Openly gay Tony winner David Hyde Pierce opened last night in the revival of David Hirson's flop La Bete to decidedly mixed reviews.

- Four major musicals are opening on Broadway this fall without the usual out-of-town tryouts due to the cost. One result - terrible scenery glitches for Women On The Verge have resulted in show stoppages and apologies from the stage.

- Bette Midler so loves the musical version of Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert that she has become one of its producers. The show made its North American debut in Toronto this week and lands on Broadway in the spring.

Pentagon Suspends Discharges During Appeal Of DADT Overturn

The Pentagon has made it official. There will be no more DADT-related discharges until the DOJ's appeal of its overturn is resolved. This move was leaked earlier today on the Rachel Maddow Show blog. The below message has been posted to the DOD's defense.gov website.
Pending an appeal, the military services have halted discharges under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, DOD officials said today. Judge Virginia Phillips of the U.S. Central District of California ordered the halt to discharges and investigations. Phillips found the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell statute unconstitutional in a Sept. 9 ruling. On Oct. 12, she issued an injunction ordering the Defense Department worldwide to halt discharges and investigations. “Earlier today, the staff judge advocate generals from the military services, in consultation with the Office of the Secretary of Defense Office of General Counsel, sent to their service staff judge advocate counterparts in the field an e-mail informing them of the ruling by Judge Virginia Phillips of the Central District of California, issuing an injunction barring the enforcement or application of 10 United States Code 654, commonly known as the ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ statute,” Pentagon spokesman Marine Col. Dave Lapan said in a written statement.

DOJ Files DADT Overturn Appeal

The Advocate reports that the Department of Justice has requested an immediate stay on the overturn on DADT pending their appeal.
Justice Department attorneys filed the request to U.S. district judge Virginia A. Phillips in Riverside, Calif., this afternoon. Should Phillips deny the request for a stay, government attorneys are expected to file an emergency request to the U.S. court of appeals for the ninth circuit. Few were surprised by news, least of all the leadership of the Log Cabin Republicans, which will oppose the application for a stay of Phillips's injunction. “After years of fighting this lawsuit, Log Cabin Republicans expected that the Obama administration would continue to pull out all the stops to defend ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’” said Christian Berle, deputy executive director of the organization. “Log Cabin Republicans will continue to advocate on behalf of the American service members who every day sacrifice in defense of our nation and our Constitution."
The Rachel Maddow Show blog reported earlier today that discharges under DADT are being suspended while the appeal is being considered.

UPDATE: The Log Cabin Republicans respond.
Christian Berle, Deputy Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans: "After years of fighting this lawsuit, Log Cabin Republicans expected that the Obama administration would continue to pull out all the stops to defend 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'" said Christian Berle, Deputy Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans. "Log Cabin Republicans will continue to advocate on behalf of the American servicemembers who everyday sacrifice in defense of our nation and our Constitution. If this stay is granted, justice will be delayed, but it will not be denied. Meanwhile, we urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to do what it takes in the lame duck session to end 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' legislatively. If Senator Reid treats the minority party fairly, the votes will be there to end 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' once and for all."

Amazon Launches "Bookstore Killer" App

Amazon has launched an iPhone app which allows users to scan the barcode of any title found in a bookstore and order it directly from them instead.
The latest version of Amazon Mobile, 1.2.8, contains a bar code scanner in its search screen. As with bar code scanners in other mobile apps, Amazon Mobile uses your iPhone's camera to take in a product's zebra-striped bar code. Amazon's servers then find a match, and after you select the item, you can sign in to your account to purchase the product on the spot. As on the regular Amazon Web site, you've got gift options and a choice of multiple shipping addresses. Just like before, you can also add the product to your wish list or cart for later purchasing.
Price comparison barcode scanning apps have already existed for a couple of years, but this one seems bound to be especially effective. A similar Amazon app was previously launched for the less popular Android.

New York Yankees Promise To End Homophobic Taunting In The Stands

Responding to pressure from GLAAD, the New York Yankees have vowed to end homophobic taunting by their fans. The issue came to light on Tuesday thanks to a video (created by JMG reader Sean Chapin) which showed fans shouting an obscene version of Village People's YMCA at fans for opposing teams. Via GLAAD:
We reached out to the Yankees, and were extremely pleased with their reaction. Yankees spokesperson Alice McGillion told us “the Yankees have zero tolerance for this and any kind of abuse.” She said that security in the bleacher sections of the stadium will warn fans, before YMCA is played, that any type of homophobic abuse “will not be tolerated” and she assured us that any fans who take part in this ugly bullying will be ejected from the game. We’d like to thank McGillion and the Yankees organization for their prompt and proactive response.
The taunting has been a tradition at Yankee Stadium at least since 2006, when the original clip was first posted on YouTube, where it has received 200,000 views to date. Once again, here's Sean Chapin's version.

Anti-Abortion Teabagger Carl Paladino Is The Landlord For Planned Parenthood

Remember when Carl Paladino said that he opposes abortion in every circumstance, even in cases of incest or rape? Apparently that objection doesn't extend to being paid rent from the Planned Parenthood clinic in a shopping center he owns. In fact, Paladino even cited the presence of the Niagara Falls abortion clinic in a petition requesting a special tax exemption on the complex.
"It's very hypocritical. He wants to make money and he will bend his religious and political beliefs for it," said Jamie Merritt, 31, of Paladino as she entered the center for an "emergency" appointment. "If I felt strongly and was so against abortion, I would not allow Planned Parenthood on my property," added Merritt, a Buffalo waitress. Paladino, the GOP gubernatorial hopeful, has said he would approve of abortion only in cases where a mother's life is in peril. Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York President Tracey Brooks accused Paladino of "talking out of one side of his mouth" against abortion while "renting and accepting money from health-care centers he's looking to cut funding to."
Paladino's campaign said the Planned Parenthood office was grandfathered into the shopping center's lease when he bought it and that he can't do anything about it. But he will use the clinic to ask for special tax breaks.

Quote Of The Day - NY Sen. Ruben Diaz

"Mr. Mayor, will you please make up your mind? Last week, Mayor Bloomberg released a video wherein he stated his support for marriage equality ‘Because government shouldn’t tell you who to love or who to marry’. Today, Mayor Bloomberg sought permission from the Federal Government to prohibit New York food stamp recipients from using their food stamps to purchase soda and other sugary beverages. Mr. Mayor, will you please make up your mind? It is hypocritical to say on one hand that the government should not be involved. Today, however, that is exactly what you did. Either the government should or should not be involved in telling people what or what not to eat, drink, and smoke, or who they can or can’t marry. You can’t have it both ways." - New York's most infamous homophobe, NY Sen. Ruben Diaz.

NEW YORK: Three Long Island Teens Arrested For Gay-Bashing 14 Year-Old

Three Long Island high school students have been arrested for stomping and kicking a 14 year-old boy while screaming anti-gay epithets at him.
Nassau County Police say on Tuesday at 2:15 p.m., 18-year-old David Spencer of North Valley Stream; 16-year-old Chase Morrison of Lakeview; and 14-year-old Roy Wilson of Baldwin assaulted their 14-year-old classmate on a bus leaving the Nassau BOCES Career Preparatory High School in Hicksville. Spencer and Morrison threw insults at the victim for his sexual orientation while they and Wilson beat the boy up. The victim was stomped and kicked on his arms, legs, stomach and thighs. He also suffered a visible bruise on his forearms and pain throughout his body. On the bus ride to school the following morning on Wednesday at 7:20 a.m., the Spencer and Morrison once again insulted the victim for being gay. This time, they slapped him across the face and on the head.
Last night the three boys were charged with assault and harassment. They will be arraigned today.

HRC & Courage Campaign To File Joint IRS Complaint Against NOM's Ruth Institute

The Human Rights Campaign and the Courage Campaign announced today that they intend to file an IRS complaint against the Ruth Institute, which is an arm of the National Organization for Marriage. The complaint demands that the IRS "revoke the Ruth Institute’s tax-exempt status and seek an injunction to prevent future violations by either the Ruth Institute or the NOM Education Fund." View the complaint here (PDF). Via press release:
The complaint makes clear the Ruth Institute “has repeatedly and flagrantly violated the political campaign activity prohibition of section 501(c) (3) by intervening and participating in multiple candidate campaigns. In the past year Ruth Institute resources have illegally been used to advocate for a U.S. Senate candidate as well as local and statewide judicial candidates.” HRC and the Courage Campaign cite the repeated involvement of the Ruth Institute in Carly Fiorina’s Senate race and in judicial elections in California and Iowa as clear violations of federal law. “The evidence that the Ruth Institute and the NOM Education Fund repeatedly stepped over the line into illegal activity is indisputable,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Even fringe groups like NOM, its associates, and its affiliate groups must abide by federal law. Is the Ruth Institute nothing more than a front and funnel for NOM's political activities? We trust the IRS can unveil the truth."

“Time and again, NOM has shown itself as a radical extremist group bent on attacking families and undermining election laws,” said Courage Campaign Chairman and Founder Rick Jacobs. “By openly flouting IRS regulations governing charities, NOM is effectively forcing taxpayers to subsidize its political activities. This is not just the height of arrogance, it’s against the law.” Pursuant to the federal tax code, as a charitable organization, the Ruth Institute may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates. Violation of this prohibition can result in stiff penalties against the organization and its officials as well as potential revocation of its tax exempt status by IRS.

COLORADO: Teabagger Billboard Depicts President Obama As Gay Man

A billboard just erected in Grand Junction, Colorado depicts the president as a gay man, a terrorist, a Mexican, and a gangster. The characters are shown playing poker using the Bible and the Constitution as betting stakes.
The artist who designed the billboard, Paul Snover, won't say who paid him $500 to create the image. But he did explain what the unidentified man wanted to say: "He doesn't care for what Obama is doing for the country and wanted to get that across to the people of Grand Junction and possibly around the country," Snover told NBC11. "He was wanting to represent the influences he saw the president as having in his administration," he told KJCT8. The Obamas are surrounded by rats named FED, EPA and "trial lawyers," and vultures named after George Soros and the United Nations.
The local leaders of both major parties have denounced the billboard as "disrespectful."

GLAAD reports today that Stonewall Riots veteran Ray Castro has died at the age of 68. Via press release:
Raymond Castro, a veteran of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion in New York City, died in his hometown of Madeira Beach, Florida on Saturday, October 9th. He was 68 years old and is survived by his husband of 31 years, Frank Sturniolo, 50. On June 27, 1969 Castro was inside the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, on the first night of the uprising and is documented as the only person arrested that evening who was known to be gay, according to historian David Carter.

Although police raids of gay-friendly bars were sadly common at the time, on that night people fought back. As two officers were escorting Castro out of the bar, the crowd shouted, "Let him go, let him go," and he pushed against the waiting patrol wagon with both feet, knocking the two cops to the ground. He was put in the back of the vehicle and detained, but was later released without charge. He hired a lawyer to resist the charge against him in court and also his lawyer represent an arrested lesbian who was in the patrol wagon with him. Typical of his generosity, he did not let the lesbian assist in paying the attorney who represented them. That night's events, including Castro's struggle against police, gave birth to the modern gay civil rights movement.
Castro attended NYC Pride this year, saying: "A lot of people, especially the young ones, have no inkling what Stonewall is. They think Gay Pride is just a big party. None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for 1969. I had no idea that I was going to be involved in history-making. ... I would do it all over again."

Top Two Leaders Of San Francisco Pride Resign Over Financial Crisis

San Francisco Pride executive director Amy Andre and board president Mikayla Connell have both resigned over the organization's financial crisis. Via Bay Area Reporter:
Andre and Connell's decisions to leave come after months of both women being defensive over Pride's crumbling finances. The two leave the organization with a deficit for this year that could be as much as $150,000. That figure includes an estimated $55,000 to $60,000 that is owed to beverage partners from this year's event. Connell, who had previously expressed a desire to resign, has been board president for four years. Her term as president expired Tuesday night, and she had decided not to run again. She's also resigned from the board altogether, she said in an e-mail exchange with the Bay Area Reporter . Andre, who started as executive director last October, did not respond to requests for comment. The effective date for her resignation wasn't immediately confirmed.
Openly gay San Francisco city supervisors Bevan Dufty and David Campos say they will step in and help the organization resolve its finances.

American Legion: DADT Must Be Defended

The three million member American Legion today demanded that the Obama administration defend DADT and appeal its overturn.
"Consistent with our long-standing policy of allowing the military to police its own requirements and standards for service, The American Legion requests you appeal this decision and seek a stay on the current injunction," National Commander Jimmie L. Foster wrote in a letter to the White House. "No action by a single federal judge should obviate the policy of Don't Ask; Don't Tell before the Department of Defense completes its review." In meetings held in May, the organization passed a resolution urging Congress not to take any action that would alter the Department of Defense policy of DADT before it had a chance to complete the review. "For an unelected judge with lifetime tenure to issue such a ruling while the military was in the process of surveying its troops on the impact of such a policy change is outrageous," Foster said. "She is basically saying that she knows more than our military leadership, our Congress and our elected commander in chief."

Local NYC news was outside a Times Square theater last night where folks from a company called Seat Defenders were hawking plastic sacks intended to protect moviegoers from bedbugs. $17.95 for a package of 12 seat covers. One Times Square theater closed for two days over the summer to fumigate after patrons complained of being covered with bedbug bites.

O'Donnell: Repealing DADT Would Be Like Allowing Adultery In The Military

Via Wonkroom, here's what Christine O'Donnell said about DADT.
"A federal judge recently ruled that we have to overturn Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. There are a couple of things we need to say about that. First of all, judges should not be legislating from the bench. Second of all, it’s up to the military to set the policy that the military believes is in the best interest of unit cohesiveness and military readiness. The military already regulates personal behavior in that it doesn’t allow affairs to go on within your chain of command. It does not allow it you are married to have an adulterous affair within the military. So the military already regulates personal behavior because it feels that it is in the best interest of our military readiness. I don’t think that Congress should be forcing a social agenda on to our military. I think we should leave that to the military."
Fuller clips of the debate are in the post below this one.

Another Bizarre Lie From Sarah Palin

Speaking to an quivering teabagger audience in Montgomery, Alabama, Sarah Palin said this:
"I tell Bristol, I am texting her and say 'Bristol'...and I wasn't kidding, I thought that this was a practical thing to do...'How about if Todd and I we load up all the kids in our motorhome and drive down, park on Rodeo Drive and we come to see you.' And I honestly didn't think that it was an unusual thing to suggest, that's what you do, a road trip. (...) But anyway, that's what we did, though, we parked a little bit further away from Rodeo Drive, and we got to watch Bristol."
Palingates did some fact-checking, noting that the 3375-mile drive from Wasilla to Los Angeles would take forever. And unless the Palin motorhome has a jet engine, there's no way she could have been in Los Angeles a mere two days after being photographed at her home in Alaska. Aaaand there's the pesky little fact of being seen on an Alaska Airlines flight to from Portland to Los Angeles on the day before the show. Oops!

Palingates makes the obvious conclusion: "The 'road trip' only existed in Sarah Palin's crazy mind - she shamelessly used this made-up story to impress her audience in Montgomery."

PhoboQuotable -Joseph Farah

"There is a reason most Americans do not want to promote homosexual behavior. They know in their hearts it's wrong. The Bible condemns it. But if we can't talk about the Bible openly in America, we can no longer talk about ultimate truth. We can no longer have a firm basis for knowing right from wrong – because it is our one and only guidepost on such matters.

"It is the basis for most of our laws. It is the basis for the very existence of this independent nation. It is the basis for our entire value system. Do you want your children to be indoctrinated into believing that homosexuality is just as right as heterosexuality? Do you want them to believe they cannot resist the temptations of homosexuality? Do you want them to believe God doesn't care how they behave sexually – or worse yet that God wants them to do whatever feels right to them?

"That's what is at stake in this debate. Right and wrong. I'm troubled by the fact that so few Americans are willing to stand up and say it. Where are they hiding? Where are the pro-family organizations? Where is the church? Why is everyone who should know better so quiet? Why are they throwing in the towel? Why are they in retreat?" - World Net Daily founder Joseph Farah and his gay pornstache, in an endorsement of Carl Paladino.

It's rather curious that Farah feels his fellow pig-fucking Christofascists have been "quiet" on this when in the last few days the American Family Association has declared that gay teen suicides are the result of gay activism and the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins said that if queer kids would just stop being so fucking gay, they wouldn't be so fucking dead.

Tweet Of The Day - James Hartline

"Ex-gay" whackadoodle and multiple felon James Hartline is claiming credit for this week's shuttering of the San Diego Gay & Lesbian Times. Of course, the paper's closure had absolutely nothing to do with James Hartline, but facts and lying matter little to San Diego's "leading warrior for Christ" (his self-awarded title.) We're still waiting on Hartline's promised Broadway musical The Chronicles Of Sodom, BTW.

"Bishop" Harry Jackson Petitions Supreme Court To Overturn DC Gay Marriage

With the backing of the anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund, Maryland-based carpetbagger Bishop Harry Jackson has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in a last-ditch effort to overturn same-sex marriage in Washington DC. (Screencaps above, PDF here.) The Human Rights Campaign reacts via press release:
Today, Bishop Harry Jackson – who pastors a Maryland congregation and has been the leading voice against marriage equality in the District of Columbia – petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case attempting to put the rights of District citizens up to a vote of the people. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issued the following statement: “Today’s petition by Bishop Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court is nothing more than a last-ditch attempt by outside interests to try to eliminate marriage equality in the District. Every court that has reviewed this case, including two Superior Court judges and the full Court of Appeals, has found Jackson’s arguments to be without merit. We are confident that the District’s highest court properly decided that the Council had the right to broadly protect human rights for all District residents by prohibiting discriminatory ballot initiatives. “The Council and Mayor, representing District residents, overwhelmingly approved legislation providing for marriage equality. And we will remain vigilant against any efforts to take it away.”
CORRECTION: The PDF link above now goes to the correct document. The HRC sends its apologies.

Today In Teabagger Videos

The below clip may be the single most outrageous/ridiculous of the many anti-Obama teabagger videos I've posted. Over at Pam's House Blend, Alvin McEwin quotes People For The American Way:
Patriot PAC has unveiled Operation Black Storm, a national coalition effort to unite the nation behind the 15 black conservative congressional candidates running in key districts around the country as Republican nominees for the upcoming November elections. Helping to lead the charge among the Tea Party and Patriot movement in America for substantive political reform, Operation Black Storm will fight to fundamentally reshape the makeup of the U.S. Congress on November 2, 2010.

. . . This coalition has put its collective weight behind these highly qualified conservative black candidates to provide the resources and exposure they need to win on Election Day. Coalition members helping with voter education and candidate scorecards include Break the Bonds of Tyranny, Unite in Action, The ConservativeMESSENGER, The Frederick Douglass Foundation, and The Black Sphere, among others.
